This year, Pokemon is turning twenty years old. The series is very personally important to me, and I will tell you why.
It saved my family after my dad died.
I'm not kidding. My father died on October 9th 1996. I was two years old, and I didn't understand what was going on. My brother was angry at everything. Mama was constantly sad. And daddy was gone. I didn't understand why everything was bad, but it felt like it would never get better.
And then on Christmas Eve 1997 it did.
My grandparents came to visit, and they took us to the mall. Not knowing what to buy us, he let my brother pick out two videogames.
Pokemon Red version, and Pokemon Blue Version.
I can't really explain what happened next. But the mood all of a sudden lightened. My mom never knew what the games were until much later. But me and Matt grew a lot closer talking about it.
My brother was a fan. I was ADDICTED.
Games, toys, comics, coloring books, plushies, anything Pokemon related I wanted without question.
All of a sudden Matt wasn't so mad anymore. Mom stated to smile a little more often.
I hope this doesn't sound stupid or shallow, but, Pokemon SAVED my family. Just by being a huge dose of happy in a world full of sad. It reminded me that even if bad things happen there is good. There is hope. Things CAN get better.
And 19 years later, I'm still a huge PokeFreak. there is not a game I don't own, not a trivia bit I cant recite. This is a highly personal show for me, since I believe, however impossible it may seem, it brought my family out of the worst time we had ever experienced.
This is for you, Pokemon. Happy 20th anniversary.

The only reason I know that Pikachu was based on a chinchilla is because I used to have a Pokémon booklet that had information on the early card game and Pokémon Snap. The last page of the booklet had some information about chinchillas inspiring Pikachu's design.

3717267 lol I looked it up, I was way off. But to be fair, I stopped watching Pokemon almost half way through, when May and Max joined. Two reasons; the fact that Brock and Seto Kaiba shared the same actor, shocked me so much I couldn't watch Pokemon ( Yeah I was dumb kid) and two I thought Pokemon contests were stupid, ( I still sort of think that) so I moved on to other animes. I do still play the games though.
