Top Five Undertale Bosses · 1:50am Jan 5th, 2016

Here we go again! :pinkiehappy:

For those of you who somehow aren't aware of Undertale (what with everyone not shutting-up about it), it has quickly become one of my favorite games from 2015. Hell, it might even be one of my favorite games of all time, even going up next to Chrono Trigger and Super Mario Galaxy (and Metal Gear Solid 3). From the classic RPG battle system to the interesting characters to the outrageously clever humor to even the boss battles, this game has it all!

The latter of which we'll be discussing today.

Undertale has some pretty cool bosses, that's to be sure, but what are the best bosses? This has been a topic of debate for quite some time, and I think it's about time we finally delve into just what bosses come out above the others. So get ready to have a bad time, and let's count down the top five Undertale boss battles! Oh, and SPOILER WARNING for those of you who haven't played the game yet, but I think that was kinda obvious.

Number 5:
Undyne the Undying

Theme:

Ah, the Genocide route. Truly the most depressing thing I've ever seen in a video game. Everyone, and I do mean everyone you've come to love and appreciate just dies before your unstoppable onslaught, never to be seen again for the remainder of the run. There's no bringing them back with some magical power or some shit like that, there's just death. And to have a game, especially one as kooky as this, deal with such heavy things is just... sad.

Obviously, it's in human nature to enjoy killing things. Hell, why do you think the CoD games are so popular? But as you traverse the Waterfall area of the game, you start to finally feel the burden you've put yourself against. The amount of monsters become larger and larger to overcome, and the encounter rates drop with every time you murder something. But nothing spells this out more than the fight with Undyne the Undying.

With one hit, you managed to rip through Undyne's defenses and "kill" her, much like the other two bosses before her. However, with her insane amounts of determination in her, she manages to cheat death and become the most powerful enemy you've seen up until this point. Think of the battle like this: it's like Undyne's normal battle, but the difficulty skyrockets to INSANE levels. You're no longer taking 3 damage, but 11, and each attack gets harder and harder to dodge and block. But what really sells this battle for me is the music. It is called "Battle Against a True Hero", and it's one of my favorite tracks in the game. It literally symbolizes that Undyne is not the enemy, but rather the protagonist of the adventure. YOU are the villain, and she's here to absolutely murder you in order to save all life in the underground.

To me, that's just plain depressing.

Number 4:
Asgore

Theme:

Throughout the entire game, Asgore has been built-up to be this big king of the underground. Everyons talks about how great he is and how he'll get everyone out of the underground to destroy humanity and take back the world as they intended. But when you finally get to Asgore, he isn't sitting maniacally on his throne, awaiting your arrival; he's watering some flowers, completely unaware you had even fallen into the underground in the first place. I mean jeez, you'd at least expect the main "villain" of the game to at least be sitting on his throne, right?

Instead of being the great king he's been built-up to be, you find nothing more than a sad goat monster who is ashamed of all the horrible things he's done. But as he leads you into the final room where the barrier is located, Asgore begins telling you not to be afraid, treating the whole thing more like an appointment than a battle. As twilight fills the room and you feel as your journey is finally coming to an end, Asgore does something I'm not sure anyone expected: he breaks the fourth wall and absolutely shatters the MERCY icon of your battle options. I'm not sure if this means he's giving you no mercy or if he believes he doesn't deserve mercy, but either is equally as powerful a message. This becomes even more of a shock when you realize that you can only fight Asgore on the neutral route, and if you've been... *ahem*... "persuaded" by the fandom, you wouldn't have attacked anything as of thus far.

The actual battle itself is intense. Not only does Asgore come packing with a rather depressing yet still amazing battle theme, but his attacks are much like Toriel's, only harder to dodge. Certain things you do in the fight can affect how hard Asgore hits you. If you talk to him thrice and eat Toriel's Pie, his attack goes down significantly. It's little touches like these that just do it for me.

It gets sadder when you finally find out the truth about his life, however.

Number 3:
Mettaton EX

Theme:

How many letters in Mettatonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn... Well, a lot, I would assume. We first met Mettaton (see what I did there?) as a simple box with buttons, arms and a wheel for a leg. He was your average robot with a passion for the stage and a desire to murder you every step of the way. Along your journey through Hotland, you had a few combat encounters with him, but of course you knew were going to fight him proper sooner or later. But raise your god-damn hand if you played this game when it first released without any spoilers and expected Mettaton EX to happen.

Going from a box into a fabulous robot isn't easy. It takes hard work and determination, as well as a dinosaur scientist with an anime lust and shy personality. But Mettaton was able to do it because... he's Mettaton. There's really no better explanation for that. Now, this isn't your average Joe boss fight either, as there's a few twists. First of all, the ratings meter. As you progress through the battle, the meter will slowly increase or decrease depending on what you do. For example, if you eat some MTT-brand food, the ratings go up, but if you somehow disappoint the audience, the ratings go down. Pretty simple stuff, but the amount of things you can do with it is astronomical. Second, the yellow attack allows you to shoot projectiles at Mettaton's attacks, adding to the already insane bullet-hell gameplay Undertale has to offer.

His personality is also outrageously funny. If anyone's seen Jacksepticeye's videos on Undertale, you'll know he does a pretty good Mettaton voice, opting to act like a monotone robot that's trying to sound amused, but ends up sounding like, well... a robot. That's probably one of the funniest things I've heard in a long time. Also, Mettaton's second battle theme "Death by Glamour" is beyond fantastic, putting together all of Mettaton's themes together into one big grand finale!

Oh but of course, how could I have forgotten about... those legs...

Number 2:
Sans

Theme:

The Genocide run may be fun for a little while as you slaughter everything you can find. Like mentioned before, most of that fun is drained away with the Undyne battle as the stacks of bodies behind you begin to intimidate you, as well as all those standing before you frighten you. However, you press on, hoping to end the run you mistakenly chose to do first. Then, as you walk the final hallway, you come across Sans of all monsters. He asks you the question "Do you think even the worst people can change if they really try?", to which you respond with a threatening glare. He then asks:

"Do you wanna have a bad time?"

Needless to say, you engage the skeleton anyway, and surprise-surprise, you have a bad time. Yes indeed, you thought your bullet-hell skills were good? Well honey, Sans is the boss fight where your skills go to die. Sans, by default, is the weakest enemy in the game, only boasting 1 attack, 1 defense and 1 HP. It's true that he can be taken down in one hit, you just have to hit him first. And with insanely difficult-to-dodge attacks and an evasiveness stat that's literally off the charts, good luck trying to do that before you kick the bucket. And kick it again. And again. Without a doubt, if you're not prepared for this fight, you WILL die. Hell, even if you are prepared, you'll probably still die.

I like to think of Sans as a metaphor, however. You have done nothing but kill people over and over and over again, and now you're here facing him; facing all of your sins. He mocks you with his low stats, constantly dodging your attacks and putting you through the toughest fight you've probably ever faced. And even when you finally do kill him, the game ingeniously finds a way in order for you NOT to feel satisfied with the outcome, especially if you're playing for the first time. This boss is DESIGNED for you to not have any fun whatsoever.

And if somehow you are still having fun here, then maybe you really are the monster the game thinks you are.

Number 1:
Omega Flowey

Themes:

While the battle with Asriel was certainly good, it was the only final battle that only met my expectations instead of exceeded them. Again, great fight, but let's face it; nothing can surprise you by this point after the amazing battle with Omega Flowey. You see, Flowey, being the only true evil character in the game, is a dick. All through the game he does nothing but taunt you and stalk you, causing you to feel even more uncomfortable with him the more you play. But his big shining moment happens when he kills Asgore at the end of the neutral route, absorbs the six human SOULs and crashes your game. No, I'm dead serious; he crashes your game. And when you load it back up, THAT ugly face is waiting for you at the end.

Flowey's battle is a lot like Sans' in a way. All of his attacks are without a doubt difficult to dodge, but this battle acts more like an actual bullet-hell game rather than an RPG. Throughout the entire fight Flowey will start screwing around with your head and saving over your file to mess with it even more. While this is happening, the haunting theme "Your Best Nightmare" plays in the background, adding onto the intensity of the fight. Eventually, you'll start having the six human SOULs appear before you and, through redemption, give you special items that heal you and ultimately help you beat Flowey.

But without a doubt the greatest part of the boss is when you finally save all the SOULs. They surround you and give you the power to fight back and defeat that bastard flower, dropping his defense down to zero and allowing you to put some actual damage onto him. All while this is happening, the music changes to the fucking triumphant theme "Finale", which cheers you on as you deal more and more damage onto Flowey's god-like form. Yes, the battle is a lot like Sans'; but unlike Sans, finally beating Flowey is an absolutely satisfying experience, as if all things you've done thus far have joined together to help you beat this son of a bitch.

Taste the rainbow, motherfucker!! :pinkiehappy:

And that was the list! Now, what's YOUR favorite Undertale boss battle? Comment down below and tell me!

This has been SuperKamek saying thank you, have a great night, and I find it interesting how after you defeat Flowey, you're given the option to either finish him off or spare him, despite all of the terrible things he's done. That just goes to show you what kind of a game Undertale really is.

This list was...SANS -sational.

3664987 Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all knight
(Asgore battle was my favorite. Still have to beat Sans)

3664989
Yeah, me as well... :pinkiesad2:

I don't mean to fan out on a different game, and be totally rude, but, there's an awesome cryptic RPG out there, that has no true "Good vs. Evil" storyline. You aren't the villain, but you aren't a hero either. You're just a person, in a world much more massive and much more important than yourself. Conflicts between forces, you can go any way you want to (kill one side, kill the other, kill both, or even leave both of them alone, you choose.). There is no "Good" ending, you can beat the game, and prevent the inevitable, darkness, or you can walk away, and let the first flame die. If you let the first flame die, humans will be corrupted, but if you kindle it, you're only waiting for it to happen. Who is there to say which path is right, and which path is wrong, this game is complex. You make the decision, to do what you want to, and only you can decide, what you think is the right decision to make. Unlike in Undertale, where it's quite literally black and white. Sorry about fanning out on you there, it happens. :twilightsheepish:

3664993 Thinking about it, liking the Undertale playthrough so far.

3664994
Yeah, Off, right? :rainbowkiss:

3664996
Thanks! Bad news, though; my second episode got corrupted, so I'll have to go back and restart the game. The next episode may come out a little later, but I have every intention of finishing the LP.

3665004 It's called Dark Souls my friend..... also my favorite so far has been Asriel Dreemurr in all honesty.

3665009
Y'know... Off? As in... the indie game Off? :rainbowkiss:

No? :rainbowderp:

Okay... :ajsleepy:

3665028
Yeah, well, Dark Souls doesn't really interest me all that much. It's lore just sounds... boring, I dunno. :applejackunsure:

3665038 No, it has nothing to do with the Indie Game Off. It's not an Indie Game in the first place (the one I'm referring to)

3665042 But see that's the BEAUTY of it. You can make your own Lore about what happened and not follow anyone else's. Sure there are points that are clear but everything else? All up to you.

3665043
Dark Souls, right?

3665044 Yep, d'you play dark souls?

3665049 How do you play a game that tears you apart and doesn't give a damn?

3665044
Eh, I don't really dig that too much. If I'm going to be playing through a hard game, I want to learn about the lore as a reward, not make it myself. Back to Bloodborne I go! :rainbowlaugh:

3665053 Bloodborne is the same way.

3665056
Ahaha! No, it's really not. :rainbowlaugh: At least I can learn about what happened to Yharnam.

3665054
Well, that's unfortunate.

3665052 How do you NOT play a game that tears you apart and doesn't give a damn about it? Isn't it badass?

3665061 And you can also learn what happened in Lordran and Drangleic

3665063
Uh... me! I don't play it!

3665068 Lordran is the setting of Dark Souls and what happened is that it's once guardians have fallen into darkness and despair and have given up trying to defend it. All except for Lord Gwyn who refuses to let go. Dark Souls 2 takes place in Drangleic where the King there was tempted by a child of that universe's own Satan and lead his kingdom into ruin.

3665067 Okay, well, I won't think any less of you for it

3665077 I'm pretty sure I just explained it in simple terms.

3665081
Though I do find it interesting how we got from talking about Undertale to talking about Dark Souls. :ajbemused:

3665096 You didn't know what that one guy was talking about and I explained it. Pretty simple really.

3665099
Yes, but this is still a blog about Undertale.

Agreed.

Sans is awesome for his theme but his fight is nothing special just really hard. (unless you do it a lot)

Flowey on the other had was a lot more special and unique. Even more than Asriel

3665081 Here, let me explain it better.

Okay, so there are gods, who rule over the earth, and their power comes from some sort of fire. BUT! That fire is going away, and being overtaken by darkness. The power of fire is the symbol of the gods, and the power of darkness is the symbol of the humans. The god of fire and his knights battled hard to keep darkness at bay, until, his knights gave up hope. They no longer see it fit to protect the light, as they have none themselves. The god of fire works hard, to keep the darkness away, even as it's about to overtake him. And, eventually, the lord of fire, dies. You, have the choice, to give way to darkness, or let the fire stay forever unlit. If you continue the fire, the church will keep oppressing the world, owning it, if you let it go, man will become victorious, and everyone will be equal. But the darkness is not safe for humans, it distorts their body, chaotically, so, it's unhealthy for them. Choose safety, with everyone being policed around, or choose disease, with free will. It's your decision, and you make it in a few minutes.

You know you're wrong, right? Sans isnt the boss in that fight, you are, and the player loses. :trollestia:

3665179
Another great metaphor, but I just used Sans for simplicity's sake, y'know?

3665197 Can't make an omelet without committing genocide? :twilightoops:
