Random Story Recommendations — Issue #3 (Dead Story Edition!) · 3:50pm Dec 26th, 2015

Well, here's a depressing issue. Wow. Can't believe I'm doing this. Today I'm recommending stories that are dead. Or likely dead. Implicitly dead.

Why? Cause I want you all to share in my pain, that's why. I'm evil. Rawr.

Since I Was Small by FifthAlicorn

Genre(s) Adventure
Central Characters: Queen Chrysalis

This fic is an interpretation of Chrysalis's backstory, starting from her fillyhood in the city of Arkadium (no relation to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, sadly). It's told through engaging writing and strong worldbuilding, and is a great basis for a lengthy epic. The writing reminds me of the sort of steampunk adventure stories I read when I was but a wee lad on the farm pining for the big city, and the characterization of filly-Chrysalis is interesting to read.

Yeah. It was an interesting start to a story that's been silent for awhile.

Celestia's Years Alone by Ruskiem43

Central Characters: Princess Celestia

This looked like a neat, underused concept. It was to be a story detailing Celestia's years directly after Luna's banishment. Not really sure why, but this isn't something I see a lot of people write about, and I've never really understood why.

Unfortunately, the story hasn't updated past the prologue and the author has been offline for just as long.

It did a good job of capturing Celestia's emotions, and while the writing was a little rough in places, it really showed nothing but promise. I particularly liked the jumps in the narrative's time, it was neat how it presented us with little threads that obviously were parts of larger narratives, but never lingered on them long enough for them to be fleshed out fully, leaving much to the reader's interpretation.

This Blackened Blood by Surry

Genre(s) Tragedy
Central Characters: Princess Celestia, Princess Luna

This story is an interpretation of Luna's fall and Nightmare Moon's rise, told in the style of a William Shakespeare tragedy. Might sound like kind of a gimmicky concept, but I thought it was neat and the author really did a good job writing in the archaic style. What really striked me was how well it captured Luna's frustration at her subject's treatment of her, it really made her incoming fall seem much more believable.

Yeah, I saved the most tragic for last.

This story is fantastic. It's funny, it's well-written, it contains stellar worldbuilding and great characterization of Twilight and Celestia, and yet it's update frequency is a damn shame and the author has been offline for 20 weeks. Probably gonna write a full review on this one eventually, telling you all to drop everything and read it.
