Hello, everyone! As evidenced by my current avatar image, it's around that time for the Fimfiction community to jubilantly explode with Santa hats. 
This is a tradition started by The Descendant. He has recently posted a blog for everyone to don a Santa hat somewhere on their avatars. He's been doing this every year since 2012.
Here's how to add a hat, quoted from the raven's blog:
It is simply done using a transparent .gif/.png and the most basic image editing programs which come on most computers. Here's a couple of pages full of transparent .gifs/.png's for you to choose one from:
If you need any help to do this, all you have to do is ask on his blog. (I'm afraid I'm not very helpful about this, myself.

Of course, if your usual avatar can't very well wear a Santa hat, you could always take my approach and turn your avatar into a Santa hat. 
Also, feel free to reblog about this tradition to spread it as far around the site as we can!

Thankfully, all you have to do is ask. He helped me out last year. (Or rather, he tried to. The avatar I used last year couldn't really wear a Santa hat either, which is why I took to my approach of becoming a Santa hat.)
