I need help deciding what to do. · 7:02pm Oct 21st, 2015
Yesterday I returned to the site after a long absence. If you wish to know exactly what happened, please see my previous blog.
I need to talk about a serious problem I have run into while writing Discord Underground Talk Radio. It is a problem I never even realized this could be a problem until long after I started it. It has concerned me for some time now, but I put it off, thinking that I could figure out a solution 'later'. I haven't come up with a solution. In fact, it is slowing down my writing of DUTR. So now I want some advice.
My intention is to have make another story that occurs parallel to the radio show. It would show some events mentioned in the radio show from the another perspective that isn't Discord's, and offer more detailed, credible insight as to what has been going on in the time that Discord has been running his show.
The problem is that it is just simply not the same kind of story as Discord Underground Talk Radio. DUTR is, to a degree, not even a proper 'story' at all. Instead, it consists of Discord spouting nonsense and telling tall tales that may or may not be true. It's what the audience expects from that story, it is what you guys come to that story for, and it is what you will continue to get right up until the end, even if the last few chapters will have a little bit of actual story in them.
But this other story that I have in mind does not have the same reasons to like it. And thus, and I suspect that some of the people who liked DUTR will would not like this other story. And I don't want to try to force readers to go and read another fic that might not contain the sort of content that they were hoping for.
Another problem is that, with DUTR receiving as much attention as it has, I would feel like associating another story with it after the fact that is not of the exact same theme would be an uncalled for demand for attention. That's not what I want at all. The rest of my stories don't get nearly the same amount of attention that DUTR does, and I am fine with that. I write them anyway because I enjoy writing them, and a few people that I know personally also wish for me to. If I were to propose to readers of DUTR that they should read this other story because it happens in parallel, I feel like people would think that I am trying force a duplicate of DUTR's success, which is not the case at all.
I still would like to write this story, and it wouldn't make sense not to link it in DUTR and invite people to check it out, but I don't know how to go about it without feeling like I am manipulating you guys. I'm not sure what I should do.
Which brings me to the question that I wish to ask you. How should I go about this?
You should do it, i mean when you talk about it, you seem like you got the ideas to do it and like you said you'd like it
Discord Underground Talk Radio brought some interesting events, some really stupid, and some....just being random like Discord so seein this story from another point of view with the princesses wondering what got into their subjects to ask such questions.
yeah it could be interesting.
Beats me
I have no idea how to write the story, but the second problem is eminently solvable. Just be honest with people and say "this story is related to DUTR, but it is significantly different in style and tone, so try it at at your own risk." Then people can make their own decisions freely.
Be honest- say it is a side story with a different perspective and tone. People will understand, and it will be expanding the universe- and more people may like it then you'd think.
I've let this stew for a couple of days and I appreciate you guys telling me what you think. I'll probably do just as Howard and Recentteen suggested. I still feel nervous about it, but I guess I just need to take my time and make sure that it is done as close to "right" as I can get.
