Friendship Games deleted scenes (Spoilers) · 10:25pm Oct 13th, 2015
I know I am not one of those "analyst" bronies or what not, but I really had to say/type something about the deleted scenes for Friendship Games. I liked the movie well enough, even if not as much as Rainbow Rocks, so I bought the Blu-Ray/DVD. First of all I was a little disappointed it didn't include Sunset's song "My Past is not Today", Rarity's "Life is a Runway", or the group's "Friendship through the Ages", though I guess they consider those technically Rainbow Rocks for some reason. DVD did at least have the shorts from before Friendship Games which was nice.
Regardless, it was the Deleted scenes I found interesting. It seems they had more going on with Sunset than just figuring out magic in the human world. It also seems the tie to the Season five finale wasn't originally planned either. From what I gathered, it seemed like they originally wanted to have Sunset trying to figure out where she belongs. Twilight's "What More is out there" song was originally going to be a duet with Sunset Shimmer where Sunset mentions how she misses Equestria and how things were there. I actually liked this version better.
Also it had a scene where Sunset met with Princess Twilight in a cafe, the scene seems to have come after the duet song mentioned above. There Sunset tells Twilight how she likes her friends and life here, but it is too ordinary and how she misses Equestria. She even asks if she can return to Equestria and stay home there. She also talks about how she can't figure out what is going on with magic here and the pressure she is feeling. Twilight encourages Sunset to be strong and figure it out and how she believes in Sunset and then tells her she can always return to Equestria whenever she wants. It was a nice scene similar to the kitchen scene in Rainbow Rocks I felt. I really liked it. It also implied that Sunset and Twilight had a deeper friendship going on with Sunset and her seemingly going back and forth between worlds to meet with each other.
Another scene was a different version of the hallway scene after they all met human Twilight. In this version, Sunset finally mentions her frustrated feelings about magic in the human world and how she kind of misses home, but doesn't want to really leave her friends either more or less. It was nice because the others showed they were more supportive of her and AJ told her she should just worry about the games for now and then she can decide what to do and they will understand what she chooses.
The last scene was an alternate ending to movie. Instead of Twilight staying at CHS she decides to return and stay at Crystal Prep and learn more about friendship there. It also showed that the Shadowbolts actually enjoyed getting to know the CHS students more than competing against them and the games themselves. The scene ended with Pinkie Ponying up again and Sunset telling her friends that she actually doesn't mind her situation anymore and in fact looks forward to staying in the human world to study magic there, even if it is frustrating that she doesn't know what it will always do. She then talks about going back to Equestria for visits at least and especially telling Princess Twilight about her human counter part.
I actually kind of wish they went with this extra plot in the end. It was nice how it seemed they wanted to have something more than just the magic going wild at Friendship Games and Sunset trying to figure it out. I am guessing some executive probably told them they had to change it and throw in the Season five finale tie in, or something. Either way it was still good watching the movie again and I'm sure I will watch it more times as well kind of like I do with Rainbow Rocks.
