Nineteenth Century Discussion 3: Battles and War · 10:16pm Oct 8th, 2015
Hey everypony,
So, what about that Vicky 2 war mechanic, huh?
For those who do not know, battles in Victoria 2 can last weeks, months, or (and I actually had this happen to me once, swear to Celestia) even a year or more. While this is all very well and good for WWI-esk stuff, it doesn't really make sense for the time frame we are in: Post Napoleonic warfare. Mobility is king in this time frame, and nobody/nopony is really going to start going to the trenches until the American Civil War.
With this in mind, should I retcon Vicky 2's mechanic to essentially compound battles to be only a few days long? Or shall I continue as is, and let the bodies pile up in a month long bloodbath? Note that this is not a vote, it's a discussion.
Well, I would say to do it like in real-life, which would be in the timeframe of hours or at most a day or two unless it was a siege.
After all, battles in that era didn't last long and didn't had much high body counts since more often than not one side would simply retreat instead of keep fighting. Victoria II fails to emulate this since the AI never seems to prematurely retreat. Don't know if it can, but I've never seen it. As such, since they only retreat when their Organization falls to 0, after factoring the stats and RNG it can take up to weeks/months. The only alternative the AI does is fighting to the last man, which is also fairly unrealistic for the time.
So yeah, I'd say to not do it like the game.

I agree with what is said.
Stay I think, well, stay historical. He said all that I would have said anyway.
3453412 For this, I agree.
