Dragonjek's Recommendations #1 · 9:53pm Sep 22nd, 2015
Hiya!
I like stories and music (this is the point when you roll your eyes and think to yourself, ‘No shit, Sherlock!’. So, while I’m not nearly as widely experienced as some people, I have still encountered a wealth of wonders that I’d like to recommend to you. There isn’t really a limit to what I’ll bring up—a song, a fanfic, a videogame, a novel, and anime… anything that pops into my mind as something I’d like to recommend that day.
I’d like this to be a daily thing, but I know my track record with trying to keep a schedule. So, without further ado...
Lullaby for a Princess
This was one of the very earliest pieces of fanwork that I encountered for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I joined the fandom not long after it came out, actually, and I was absolutely blown away. It’s one of the most intense, emotional songs I have ever encountered, and I’m not ashamed to say that listening to it still makes me cry. It is the best song I have heard from any fandom, and quite possibly the best song I’ve encountered ever.
I’m certain that a lot of you know about the animation that came out for the song a couple months ago. It is certainly amazing, and it will forever be a part of the images that run through my head when I hear the lyrics to this song. But it was the song itself that first captured my heart, and the animation—no matter how good—is ultimately an accessory. A king not wearing a crown is no less royal than one bearing one.
Also, there’s a few differences in the music between the two versions. PonyPhonic refers to the version in the animation as “remastered”, but I prefer the original ( “Lullay moon princess…” originally played twice in the song, but the stanzas in the middle of Celestia’s recounting of her failures were cut out).
