    If you like D&D stuff, or just tabletop rpg stuff in general, one of the people I follow online is trying to get funding to create something to sell for Dungeon Masters to increase immersion.

    Happy Holidays

    This is your yearly reminder that I wrote a decently funny Christmas story in the long-ago times. If you haven't read it, you should! If you have read it, maybe you should just stick with blurred memories of how good it was.

    Books!

    So, due to my high level connections here and there, I now have an advance copy of several highly sought after ponyfic books. Now that I've had a chance to check several of them out in person, I have to say that Ponyfeather Publishing does excellent work. Anyone able to pick one up, at Bronycon or ordering them afterward, should totally do so.

    So, I've actually been posting on my primary blog lately. Which has been nice, given that I've pulled myself out of depression enough to actually do stuff like that. So, here's been my daily content over there:

Mechanical Aptitude by Estee

The sequel to previous story. Not quite as good as the previous one. Mostly due to the focus of the story. I would have liked a more general slice of life story about the main character. My favorite parts were her talking with Rainbow Dash and Twilight Sparkle. The ‘villain’ of the piece was the least enjoyable part. Which was kind of the point, he was meant to be unlikable. A personality type a bit more common on the internet and one I try to avoid. Still, it was a good story with bits of worldbuilding and fun characters.

The First Light of Dawn by Cold in Gardez
[story link] [my original review]

This was really good. Hit my alicorn mythology and worldbuilding buttons just right. Longer than I expected and I ran into the same problem as I often have. Was on my kindle so long that I had forgotten what it was about. So went into it pretty much blind. A properly epic story that covers a lot of emotional ground. Once again I would have liked a bit more slice of life stuff, at the beginning really, but that’s just because I enjoy that sort of thing. The story itself is paced and balanced quite nicely. Just enough slice of life in the first half to make the rest have emotional impact. Several parts had me feeling really sad, which is fairly rare for me. Not quite enough to cry, but only two books have ever gotten that strong a emotional reaction out of me, so even coming close is impressive. So I would highly recommend this one. Just now went to check the story description and it really sells things short. It is so much more epic and touching than the simple premise makes it sound.

Light and silly. Just what I needed after First Light Of Dawn. The best part of this story is definitely the part at the very end when they are talking about rap sheets.

Trixie Discovers Celestia Is Not A Genius by The Delirium

Eh, found this lackluster. Writing isn’t really all that bad. It’s just kind of, well, kind of there. Had one good line (“Oh Trixie, you do not need to be remotely intelligent to run a nation. It is quite easy.”. Other than that, I think ‘eh’ sums up my reaction.

The Enchanted Library (One-shot) by Monochromatic

I wanted this to be longer. This could be extended into a good adventure and/or romance story. Plus I wanted to know how you could have Princess Twilight Sparkle predating Rarity. It does have something of a fairy tale feel to it, so it worked. I’d recommend it.

As always, The Big Master Review List is here: { THE MASTER LIST }
If you know of a text-format reviewer I'm not keeping track of, please let me know and I'll see if they meet the criteria to be assimilated into the list.

If you are an author who wants a more detailed review of a story I've covered feel free to message me. My reviews tend to be fairly light, mostly just reactions to a story right after reading it. I am happy to give a more careful read and reply to anyone who wants more precision and/or feedback.
