It's good... or at least I think so and I hope any of you out there that have taken the time to watch the new movie premiere think so too.

    The Worst Kind of Dream

It isn't a nightmare, because no matter how frightening those might be in the moment, eventually you wake up and can take comfort in the realization that none of it was real.

Why is Equestria Ruled by a Mere Princess? · 4:16am Aug 1st, 2012

No real updates on any of my fics, so sorry if you came here only looking for news on that. I promise I haven't abandoned Elements of Insanity and at the very least I am committed to introducing Twilight's entire band of misfit failures, but work is proceeding slowly and interspersed with two new Lunaverse fics I want to publish.

...

So, I was having dinner with my family and somehow or another the primary topic of the evening became monarchy; mostly the British monarchy, but also others including fictional states and just the generic concept of royalty. Regretfully my family, though aware of it, do not share my passion for pastel equines so Equestria never came up, but it was sitting off to the sidelines of my brain the whole time.

Anyway, one of the things that came up was the hierarchy of noble ranks and such; got to teach my father that there is actually a remarkably wide gap between Prince/Princess and King/Queen. This lead me personally to start doing some deeper thinking on the alicorn sisters and how they became royalty and why they seem to carry such lowly titles for the rulers of a seemingly sovereign nation. In the past I had always thought it to be mere divine ordainment combined with a form of humility, but now I've started thinking in a slightly more political direction.

WARNING: Much of what follows has little to do with the Lunaverse proper and more to do with my own personal head-canon.

We know that ponies recognize the title of King/Queen, as the pre-Equestrian unicorns where lead by such a monarch. Based on the scenery used in the Hearth Warming play plus the abandoned mines where Chrysalis imprisoned Cadance, I'd also wager that there is a fair chance that Canterlot sits atop the sight where Princess Platinum originally attempted to found Unicornia. Assuming that the play is a narrative compression of the actual historical events, I'd probably even venture to guess that Canterlot was indeed originally built as the capital of Unicornia before the three tribes unified.

My personal head-canon on where the alicorn sisters came from varies from day to day, but in all my idealized origins they are not actually royalty. I used to think their titles where given to them by grateful ponies after the defeat of discord, and to an extent I still might think that is at least partial the case, but well politics is a fickle thing so, well here goes...

Celestia's proper title is Princess Consort as she was once married to the last of the unicorn kings (not sure if they ever truly loved each other or if it was purely a political convenience). That union never produced a direct heir to the throne, so after his death Celestia simply continued to rule. It might have been more legitimate for succession to pass to one of the king's brothers or nephews (among which I suspect would have existed Blueblood's direct ancestor, thus how he can be considered Celestia's nephew), but well, being a living god that saved the nation from an eldritch horror has a way of making such technicalities seem trivial. I'm not entirely sure where Luna's title enters into this. Perhaps she was married to the leader of one of the other two tribes, or perhaps it was merely a courtesy granted her by virtue of being Celestia's sister; I'll have to ponder that more later.

...

Now, more than ever, I think I want to actually get around to eventually writing my full take on Celestia's and Luna's history, but even when I'm not pre-occupied with Lunaverse stuff, I know there are other stories I want to get to first. Still got me a crossover fic staring the canon Trixe which I was working on when I first created this account. I was actually one-and-a-half chapters into that, but haven't taken the time to work anymore on it since joining the Lunaverse group.

Well, never mind the real reason: "Queens are evil, and Princesses are good." OR so goes the common mass media "wisdom" about intellectual properties meant for girls.

A proper in-universe reason is fine too.

Honestly, considering the fact their gods, I don't think they really care what us mere mortals think about their titles.

263002 Maybe that *is* the in-universe reason. The Earth Ponies, as a condition for joining Equestria, refused to submit to a King or Queen.

:trollestia: "Oh, I'm not Queen. That would be illegal."

Maybe they WERE Queens but then one of them went mad and in a show of humility the other went down a notch to Princess?

The Lunaverse really takes away your time to think of other fic ideas doesn't it? I have the same problem. :p

Personally I tend to view old Equestria as sill being rather cast based (pegasi as the warrior cast, earth ponies as the labor cast, and unicorns as the administrative/artisan cast), though the boundaries of those casts was not strictly enforced; ponies intermingled and married between the tribes, and were allowed to pursue any career their special talents and ambitions were suited to. Even if the noble titles were no longer strictly held by unicorns, I do believe that Equestria still had a King/Queen prior to the ascension of Celestia and Luna.

Oh, I still have plenty of time to THINK of other fic ides (this blog post is an example of such thought). I just don't have much in the way of time to actually pursue those ideas. Well technically I still could, but then I would feel guilty about wasting that time when I've got readers waiting for the next installment of my currently active project.

The Lunaverse does have a way of taking up one's time, does it not? The only reason I'm not being my usual invasive self over there is that I haven't finished A Canterlot Morning or Symphony Of Sun And Moon, and after that I have to catch up with the threads. :applejackunsure:

Word of Faust does say that Blueblood is a blood relation of the Princesses, though a very distant one.

My personal belief is that in the world of Equestria, King/Queen doesn't imply the ruler of a country, but of an entire race or species or (in the case of ponies) tribe. But ever since the events of Heart's Warming Eve, not all ponies have lived in the same country.
