Well, I did promise, so here's where it stands: preliminary cover art for Blue Moon Bloom. (contains spoilers for Quorum Sensing, teasers for the sequel). · 6:33pm Jun 28th, 2015
Well, after the last few tweaks to Scootaloo it was peanuts to make Rumble in Inkscape, in full this time, not just a bust like it was for Upside to Your Backside.
Unfortunately, since I still haven't quite got the hang of rigging, I haven't bothered importing either into Synfig, which also makes it a lot harder to adjust the facial expressions (the way the eyes are set up in Inkscape and Synfig is very different, and blinking is a lot easier in the latter). So there are still a few issues that are likely to stay in the final product.
Going over my previous attempts at home-made cover art, I'm noticing a trend, honestly. Characters will always be visible from the neck up only, and with a blank or generic background. It's either that or some plot-relevant object (done in amateurish 3D) on a generic (if any) background, which doesn't exactly scream 'read me!'. Definitely something to improve upon.
Anyway, here's what I've got so far:
Blue Moon Bloom: Scootaloo's changeling aura vs Rumble's... whatever that's supposed to be
It's got the blue moon, sort of, you can see the craters if you zoom in enough. It doesn't have the flower, not sure where I'd put it. It's got Scootaloo and her obvious changeling aura and Rumble with a less obvious aura. Originally he was going to have bloodstains on him (don't ask), but since I can't draw those as quickly I just copy-pasted the thing off Scoots and smoothed it all out. Less effort required Makes it more symmetrical.
It still looks way too bare, though. I might add some stars, but there's no nighttime scenes where they're together, so that might be a problem. Maybe the moon itself should go, then, but then where do I put these guys? I can't put them anywhere spoilerific, can I? Definitely need to give them something to stand on, too. I seem to have trouble giving characters something to stand on. Might be because I've never properly learned to draw perspective. On a completely unrelated note, can we get Andrew Loomis declared a saint? Doesn't matter what religion, just the title's enough.
But anyway, rambling aside, that's the current status of the cover. It's not much, but it's all mine. Expect the fic to come out sometime next week. And considering the sheer length of it, expect to be kept busy by it for a while. Might be the only thing I publish until August, actually, unless Warrior Meet suddenly picks up, or if I get a flash of inspiration for a oneshot.
As always, comment for others to see, PM for me to see,
Peace out.
