I wanna voice act! · 6:16pm Jun 23rd, 2015

I'm a frikkin wuss, tho. And the only character's speaking voice that I can really pull off is Pinkie Pie. :applejackunsure: Usually people think that that gives you leeway to also say that you can do a Sonata speaking voice, but they're not the same, imo. Sonata has this gratey, sing-songy thing going, and it's kinda like "hmm" when folks just nix all that for making her high-pitched alone. I'm one of those people in the latter group soooo nope nerp neeerp.

I think my Aria singing voice is getting better tho (I personally don't think my voice on 'Trouble' was too shabby for some chick who hides the fact that she can barely sing by calling it "crooning" instead). :rainbowlaugh:

But fuckit, I'm the only Aria singing voice I know of; so, I'm calling myself the best Aria singing voice out. Fake it till you make it, kiddos. :rainbowwild:

*waits for the inevitable reply with a list of 15 impeccable Aria singing voices*

I don't think I could even attempt to voice any of the Dazzlings myself. Hey, it never hurts until you try. Perhaps, if you can't exactly replicate the voice, you ought to make it your own. That's what I do. Discord isn't a natural impression for me, and certainly all the female ponies are difficult for a male to replicate, so I do little things and flourishes, even with my pronunciation, to make them distinct when I do my impressions for my audio readings.

Mimicry is the sincerest form of flattery, yes, but replicating an existing voice is hardly voice acting in my opinion. I consider it more impressive when someone does a new take on an existing character's voice that works. That may not assure you much, but I wish somebody had said this to me when I was aspiring to do vocal stuff.

3174687 I appreciate this. Glad you said it to me.

I think I agree with you. Takes talent to hear an established character voice, but still be able to create an equally good, new one.

You're welcome. I'm glad to help in any way.

That's another good point. Creating an original impression is much easier to do without having a character already voiced or a line already stated before. It's hard to be totally original when one knows so much about the show and is thus acquainted with the voices well. Of course, it also takes a lot of mastery and studying of the voicings themselves in order to exactly mimic another's voicing. I don't discredit those who can pull it off, but I often feel it's wiser just to be original. As my one theatre teacher said: one should never try to audition for a show by singing Defying Gravity because everybody knows how Idina Menzel sang it, and whoever sings it is bound to be compared to her version, which most would consider perfect. The way Johnny Cash approached doing covers was that he pretended that the song, as it was originally done, was not done the best way it could have been, so he would sing it however he envisioned it could be perfectly executed. He would always make them his own, and earned a lot of respect for that, I think.

Of course, Machiavelli said, "Men nearly always follow the tracks made by others and proceed in their affairs by imitation, even though they cannot entirely keep to the tracks of others or emulate the prowess of their models. So a prudent man should always follow in the footsteps of great men and imitate those who have been outstanding."

Take that as you wish.

Sucky part about being a dude in this fandom; the male voice roles are super-limited and there's an oversaturation of male VAs. I used to play Q in an old Star Trek radioplay (and I mean 'before youtube, uploading .wav files to our angelfire accounts' old, :applejackconfused:), so I could probably do Discord, but there a million Discord VA's out there already. Nobody's put out a call for any voicework for Cheese Sandwich that I know of either, :trixieshiftright:

I dunno, considering what vocal mimics like the legendary Jim Cummings are capable of, I'd certainly be hesitant to write them off, :derpyderp2:

Exactly, I was not trying to write them off. Consider my subsequent remark in my reply to Theigi: "Of course, it also takes a lot of mastery and studying of the voicings themselves in order to exactly mimic another's voicing. I don't discredit those who can pull it off, but I often feel it's wiser just to be original."

Also, very good point about the saturation of male voices in a fandom of a show with prevalently female characters. That's why I've contented myself to do the best I can with what I have not try to mimic the female voices on my falsetto. Also, casting calls never struck me as very inviting, so I do audio readings. Plenty of quality fanfiction out there to read, yet surprisingly so little of it receives readings.

3174899 Ah, angelfire... Where all the beautiful people were. :raritydespair: I never had one... like the other 99% of earth.

Y'know, I've never even considered how hard it must be to get voice acting stuff for bronies, but damn that sucks. :fluttershysad: I will admit, tho...

...kinda wanna hear your Discord, now. :raritystarry:

3174925 I will say, male falsetto in mlp comedic parodies are by far the best... like... always.

I've only heard of them, not actually watched them. I might look into that. :rainbowlaugh:
