Apparently, many ponies have misinterpreted The Clarity of Darkness, perhaps leading to some of the downthumbs. The second chapter is not supposed to imply that our heroes did not survive. It was merely intended to be poetic. 
I have re-written the last two sentences of the second chapter. Now it is a bit super-saccharine-y but far less confusing.
EDIT: ...and now I accidentally deleted all of the comments. Some days I feel like an object of perfect entropy, I swear.
To e fair, the only reason i would've thought they died is because of the memory spell and perhaps some delusions, either shared or one sided, caused by not wanting to think of the inevidable death. Otherwise, i wasn't entirely sure. On to reading!

Seriously, people thought they'd died at the end of the second chapter? What were they reading?

Yeah, the first chapter is supposed to be open ended because for the story I'm trying to tell, it shouldn't matter what happens after the climax.
I think it's a stronger story with only the first chapter. I added the second chapter for two reasons. To ensure this:

I didn't even read the second chapter... I understand why you wrote is, but I felt like the story stood so well one its on that I didn't need to read it, and didn't need an answer on what you thought was going to happen... although now that I know that there was controversy I may have to read it just to see.
