SURPRISE!
I'm well aware that I've gone off on several HiE topics recently. However, I'd like to clear up something so you don't misunderstand me.
All the things I've hammered on recently are things I HATE about typical HiE fics. I honestly support HiE fics in general because they underline one of the basics tenets of storytelling: exploration of the human condition and nature.
Pony fics with HiE allow us a grand vehicle to explore ourselves and what we do, much like sci-fi and fantasy do. It allows us to step outside ourselves and approach humanity from an objective viewpoint and look at the things we do and why. What makes us tick? Be it positive or negative, it allows us to look at ourselves and try to grasp the things that make us what we are. And in that, its invaluable.
Throughout all my previous rants, I've hammered on stereotypical bad things that show up that kill a story and make it little more than a useless exercise. What I'd like both writers and readers to do is look beyond the cheap carnival thrills and typical stuff you find and seek the things that make us US. All of us are unique, and regardless of how we might view ourselves, there is always something particular about each one of us that affects the world around us and those we associate with. Each thing we do changes our lives in big ways and small, and sharing those things helps others know that they are not alone, and that we all share the same fears, hopes, dreams and aspirations.
If you write an HiE fic, I wish you all the best. I look forward to seeing what becomes of your characters, human and equine. Because they all share the same traits, and that's probably the biggest message to come out of all of this: we are all the same, regardless of how different or isolated we might feel from time to time. There's a connection there, and that connection is what makes us all special.
I look forward to to journeying through life's adventures with you all.
