Galloping into Town · 5:38pm Feb 26th, 2015
So, who here enjoyed their Valentine's Day? I spent mine giving a eulogy for my mom! I'm still bitter.
Yeah... that's the big reason why I didn't do weakly chapters for a little bit. That's not to say I didn't write at all. I did a few school projects, and I wrote about the night it happened. It led to a couple weeks of depression that made writing feel sour. Fortunately, I made a breakthrough and wrote "Galloping into Town." You can bet this will influence Daughters of Poseidon. How could it not?
Even before... that day, I was having a bit of trouble writing this chapter. Originally, I had all the trio just walk into town. No giant, no chase, they simply walk into town, amaze the Greeks simply for being ponies, and get invited to the banquet. There were a few things that bugged me when I started writing. Daring Do kept on pressuring Lyra and Dia that they needed to find a place to sleep for the night. Yet, I wrote in a scene in which they just walk by a group of humans for no reason. I thought I wrote the scene well, but it just wasn't clicking for the story.
After a couple of weeks, I decided to scrap what I wrote and restart the chapter. In that time, I came up with the interesting idea that they should be chased into town. The group had to be introduced to the threat anyways, so why not do it when they're walking into town? If I didn't do it in this chapter, it would have come much later, maybe too late for it to make any impact. There was a bit of internal debate on what to make the monster. Should I make it a bull, a common symbol in Europe? Should I make it a wolf, a snake, lions, tigers, or bears, oh my? In the end, we got the giant, and some interesting lore to go behind it. I didn't write any of the lore into the chapter, but it'll come up later in the story.
So, here's a lesson to learn. If you're stuck on a chapter and can't think of anything to write beyond that, restart the chapter. You're probably not going to make the stuck scene work, and the new chapter may be even better. You can save what you scrap, though. It might work for something else in the future. Who knows?
The Playmare scene was fun to write, and even gave me an idea for a character that hasn't been introduced yet. Though, the scene made me think I'm giving Lyra too much of a hard time. Anyone have any thoughts on that?
That's it for the chapter stuff. Here's some things I did while writing this chapter.
I progressed further in Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. I managed to get to the chest for the first time, and defeated Blue Baby on the first try, with Eve.
I read Dusk Guard: Rise during my depressed period. Fun little story. Currently, I'm almost done with Project: Sunflower. I really like the multiverse aspect in that. If anyone has read my earlier stuff, you'd know I love multiverse theory. There's so much untapped potential with stories regarding multiple universes.
Also, I played Terreria. I probably won't pick it up again for a while, since there's a lot of progression walls I met. Pretty much the entire game emphasizes progression. It lacks much for creativity that similar sandbox games have, as opposed to Minecraft. But, building up a village was fun. I know there's an NPC that's based off of Pinkie Pie, but I never got her.
So, that's it for this blog. Restart your chapters if you're stuck. Until next chapter, when I'll be introducing almost the rest of the entire cast, almost.
