VariusMayhem

A german guy doing his best to tell the tale of the Trail of a Shooting Star. If you like it, why not join the Ranger HQ group for possible sidestories? Or hunt for references?

    Where the heck was I?!?

Yeah, I know... This shit takes way too fucking long. Well, I had my reasons...

First thing, I've started my own company and had very little time for anything pony related. Can't write about ponies when I'm out in the world working, that's a given...

Book 3 Chapter 2 ending rewritten

I was reading through the comments lately and read the comment of Tenth. At the time I originally wrote the chapter, I deemed it a better idea to do this in order to establish something between AJ and Tyler, since he has something special with each of his herd mates, so why not being the submissive one to her.

    Dead? Nah... Alive and kicking!

Odd... I thought I was in charge of my own fanfic. Unless I say so, the story isn't dead.

Structuring a book the 'Mayhem' way · 2:37pm Feb 2nd, 2015

Writing a story always comes with some preparation, especially when it's mature stuff. Place 2 individuals into a room and order them to bang is just clop, ordering them to fight to the death is merely another round of Mortal Kombat. So let me lift the veil of how I structure a book, to create the stuff you begin to like and love...

Step 1: forming the ideas
At the beginning, it's just that. Loose situations, snippets here and there with the vague idea of a plot. Basically I create one text file and dump in AAAAALL the crap that springs into my head. Not everything is used. Can make several pages, several thousand words before I begin the next step.

Step 2: first chapters
At one point I begin to create further files, mostly just with some sort of surrogate title that can change in the process of creation until the chapter is published. Since I aim for a 25 chapter book as of now, the file mostly gets a name of... I don't know. "Chapter XX - Rekindling Love" for an idea that I want to implement into the story, but don't have determined yet WHEN this event is taking place. More snippets and walls of text appear and disappear in the text files.

Step 3: Take the pile of text goo and drop it into a mold
Structuring the story from point A to Z. This is the step defining the plot of the story and the order of chapters. Basically I write down a summary of what happens in each chapter in a new data file to draw a mental storyboard. To give you an example, here is the current list of chapter titles I have already for Book 3 - Rebirth

Chapter 01 – A new life
Chapter 02 – Doubts
Chapter 03 – New Connections
Chapter 04 – What it means to be a Ranger
Chapter 05 – Hardships of a newborn Princess
Chapter 06 – Newcomers and Alumna
Chapter 07 – A sunset not so shimmering
Chapter 08 – The Rise of MADOS
Chapter 09– The San Palomino Catastrophe
Chapter 10 – You scratch my back...
Chapter 11 – Enrichment
Chapter 12
Chapter 13
Chapter 14
Chapter 15
Chapter 16
Chapter 17
Chapter 18
Chapter 19
Chapter 20
Chapter 21
Chapter 22
Chapter 23
Chapter 24
Chapter 25

As you can see, this step is not yet finished. :twilightblush: Mostly because I'm not certain of what to do after chpt 11, since there are several options. I have not yet decided what to do.

Step 4: Working on the individual chapters
This is the point when you folks are waiting for the next chapter once I got you hooked. :trollestia: While I work on the current chapter, there is also room for the earlier steps to kick in for further stories and/or sidestories. Plus I work on these pesky future chapters whenever inspiration comes up and bites me. :pinkiecrazy:

Step 5: Prereading
If I have a prereader, I hand the link to a Google Docs file to him or her in order to get these pesky grammar mistakes out and these darn other mistakes, too. If I don't, well... Too bad! The show must go on and I continue with the next step

Step 6: Publishing the chapter
The point you are waiting for: MORE STUFF TO READ!!! :yay: Time for me to lean back for a few days and await your comments and (hopefully constructive) criticism. But this isn't over yet... It can happen that

Step 7: Post-Publishment correction
kicks in... Once in a while, I re-read the story as well. If I find something that is wrong or miss-spelled or even lacking of something, and even if it's the format not completely done, I change it afterwards.

* * * * *
And that's the basic idea of how I make my stories... Sorta. :rainbowwild: Some things sometimes take longer than they should and sometimes they simply fly into my brain. And then is this dreadful thing called RL... Ugh! It can be so time-consuming, this RL...

As for the impending chapter, Chapter 18 - Living the dream, Nightmare of Chitin currently has 2143 words and will share its destination with the following 5 chapters, with the exception of Chapter 20 - Project Chrysalia. In chapter 18, we will face an exciting whole new set of rules and situations. Right, Pinkie Pie?

Alright, enough blabbering around. See ya around, folks! I'm back to work.
