Fanfic Spotlight #16 · 9:19am Dec 21st, 2014
Welcome back for another week of story suggestions. As we head into the holidays, maybe it's time to curl up with a cup of tea or cider, break out the portable electronic device, and enjoy some fanfic.
This week, Rarity and Granny Smith are stubborn, Twilight has a crush, and Sweetie Belle faces a choice that might change her life forever.

This little nugget of a comedy involves a pair of highly volatile substances which I have never seen mixed together before. Rarity's penchant for being stubborn, and the lovable Granny Smith's penchant for being even more stubborn. This author clearly dabbles in literary alchemy here, and the results are combustible.
Both of these characters are clear and clever in A Better Bit, so much so that this reviewer has no trouble envisioning this little scenario playing out through its opening scene. Do bear in mind that the 'Teen' rating is firmly in place, as there are a couple of (hilarious) lines of dialogue surrounding bodily functions. And, as a dark comedy, you may want to gently set aside whatever expectations you may begin the fic with. Taken lightly, this one-shot is both funny and bracing.

This is a short, sweet, and innocent romance story that happens to be a personal favorite of mine.
Basically, a certain lavender unicorn develops a crush on a certain very large stallion, and attempts to catch his attention by sharing in his interests. Being less than adept at social situations, she does her best to not seem awkward, only to come off as even more awkward than usual.
I wish I could say more as to the plotline, but doing so would only spoil one of the several surprises the plot is written around. As for technique, I’d say the fic is well-written, especially for a fanfic. More impressive is that it’s mostly written as a flashback, which I can say from experience, isn’t as easy as it looks.
In the end, it’s a nice-heartwarming story that makes for an easy read.
No Love Lost

After a string of bad circumstances combine to make one ugly mess of a bad day, Sweetie Belle feels overwhelmed with a sense that she just can’t do anything right. There’s her sense of inadequacy next to her sister, her just anger when accused of cheating on a test… over all there are just too many feelings.
What if however, this were no longer an issue for her? The strange voice she discovers in the forest can offer her just that, an escape, an unburdening of those emotions. Eyvind begins her tale by pushing Sweetie to this point, showing just how one bad day can affect a pony’s life... for better or worse.
That's it for this week. We hope you all enjoy some Hearth's Warming times with your friends and family. We'll be back next week with more storys.
In the meantime, stay safe, and keep warm!
