Why do Human-in-Equestria stories suck? · 10:54pm Oct 16th, 2014
You'd think, considering we're not aliens from another planet, that fiction writers would be able to write human characters that are both enjoyable and three dimensional and incorporate them into stories about technicolored ponies.
This is a not the case
It's been a problem for years now, and to be honest I haven't seen it get any better, which boggles my mind even now.
Why the hell do Human-in-Equestria fics tend to suck so badly?
Granted, pony fics aren't exactly charmers much of the time either, but HiE's have a special tendency to be insufferable on so many levels.
Despite how I feel about some fics I don't think there's a legitimately good HiE story out there, and that troubles me.
I have quite a few theories as to why these never seem to work out, but I'm curious about what you fellows think.
And if you say it's because it involves humans in the first place, I'm gonna have to inform you that you're full of shit.

Because you're a borderline absolutely unpleasable jerk.
My best guess is that HiE is a prime choice of inexperienced authors who have very little practice at writing stories. Secondly, HiE is very often at least partially self-insert. I know that authors must be somewhat selfish to tell the story they want to tell, but nobody wants to read someone else's personal ego trip or masturbation material.
I think it's because there isn't a lot of expectation for authors to set up characters properly in fanfiction, it's a muscle a lot of authors here don't exercise. Most of the HiE I've clicked on spends at most a chapter introducing the character before they get straight to meeting one of the main six. It makes sense, that's pretty much who people come to the site for, but it makes it hard to see the character as anything other than an author avatar. I think A Voice Among the Strangers did a decent job of keeping the focus on the human with the language barrier. Celestia Sleeps In has a human that I generally don't mind reading about, though it takes 150k words for him to actually end up in Equestria.
No legitimately good HiE fics? I respectfully disagree.
