Should New Ranger be rated mature? · 12:42am Sep 28th, 2014
So, I got to talking with Speven (a friend and fellow writer of mine) and he pointed out that in the latest chapter of New Ranger I had Abby's parents being eaten, a drowning, a throat stabbing, and a tri-decapitation that I can't believe no one has talked about thanks to Luna's final line about Arceus capturing everyone's attention (though I knew it would so it doesn't really matter). My question to you is do you think that New Ranger should be rated Mature instead of teen?
Maybe Teen with gore but it's kinda a tough call.
Unless you plan to do A LOT more chapters like that or more deeply go into Abby and Kasai *hem 'dancing' I think you're fine.
Eh, I think of Mature (Gore) as more along the lines of gratuitous violence throughout the story, even outside of combat (like may famous gore-fics the names of which I will not torment you with).
In the heat of battle, when it's literally murder the other guy before he guts you, you can get away with a lot of things that just wouldn't fly if one party were strapped down or similarly helpless.
I'd say mature for now, but give it a year or two and you could probably swap it back to Teen because of kids now a days. (some kids not all)
Just go back in time about 15 years and your voiolence would be acceptable for tv, therefore standard for the internet. I miss you violent action movies of the 90s and late 80s...
Seriously though, I'd give it a Teen rating with at least a warning in the description of slightly unsettling pasts of characters. Like the crossover with Gene and Co.? Probably made a small child ask daddy uncomfortable questions about...stuff.

Hard to say considering I'm a jaded internet user (as are frankly most of the people who read this I would imagine but whatever). I don't think just the fact that there is death is worthy of a Mature rating so much as how the death happens. Yes Abby's parents got eaten but they were already dead so that's really more like defiling of corpses (which isn't any worse IMO than all of the Sex Slavery stuff you've already talked about). Yes the hippo drown and the dragon got its heads cut off but it wasn't exactly graphic. Was it that much worse than say the Lion King (and other Disney movies) or Land Before Time? Eh. I don't know. I would think this much falls under the "Teen" label.
It depends on the content. So far, I would say the chapters have been almost mature, but not quite. But if you're going to putt something like decapitation in your story, then yes it should be rated Mature.
You aren't going into bloody detail, so you should be fine.
You could up it to teen, but it's a difficult descision. You give warning before the chapter starts so its not like anyones going in blind.
You could make it mature just to be on the safe side.
I think the safe way would be to go with Mature... Just to be sure
Personally I'd suggest mature both because of that graphic scene, as well as the heavily implied lovings! :p
