Currently writing Chapter 6 of Role Reversal and I feel it's going quite well, which is always a relief. What is worrying though is that I'm getting a bit bugged by my writing skills or more specifically, the word count of my chapters. I look at all the wonderful stories on this site and all their chapters have way more words than me. At best, I've only managed just above 4,000 a chapter so far.
It bugs me a lot because I'm starting to think that word count affects my writing skill. I suppose this just one hurdle in the long road I have ahead of me but...does word count really matter? Are you guys okay with the word count of my chapters? Do you want bigger chapters (but slower updates obviously)? If word count does matter, how can I improve mine?
I know I shouldn't let this get the best of me but its beginning to. Rest assured, chapter 6 currently has roughly 2,600 words so far. I'm not going to estimate how many words it will have by the end because I honestly don't know.
Finally, if you have any advice/criticisms, hurl them at me! I crave them (as long as they're not too harsh of course) and they'll serve to make me a better writer and therefore the quality of Role Reversal will improve. It's a win-win situation for everypony!
Until next time, thanks for reading!
I get the same feeling a lot too. As much as I really want to make long chapters, sometimes I just feel that it's good to end it in a certain spot, whether that's at 3000 words or 900. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Besides, the pacing varies between stories. An HiE story might have long, drawn out chapters while a story written like a journal might have short, concise ones.
So long as you can keep your readers really engrossed in the story, you won't need 10,000-word chapters. And I'd say you've done a great job at that. Keep up the good work!

Hm, aye, you're very right about that! Role Reversal is crucially a character development story in my eyes, so I suppose that will affect the word count per chapter.
Thanks for the kind words!
Back to writing for me!
Alright, I'm just going to say that I've never read your story. I saw it on the featured reel and thought it sounded okay, but what really drew me in was this blog. I have one, very, very important thing to say:
Whatever you do, do not obsess over your word count being low. It doesn't matter if you feel that your story is or isn't long enough; what does matter is that you feel it is well-written and purposeful. You don't need to appease to a group of people (that are actually in the minority) that want you to write an epic-length story. In fact, most people enjoy reading a story that is to-the-point rather than long-winded.
Don't put pressure on yourself to add more words to your story. Just don't.
Good luck, Gingerhooves.
