    In a Schlump

The title says it. I haven't written anything of real substance in ages, and despite being quite frustrated with that I can never seem to write anything whenever I sit down to do so.

Normally I wouldn't want to make fairly frivolous posts like this, but I've decided to make an effort to communicate with you guys a little better.

    Been A Long Time Coming

Hello. It's been a while. Three months since most of you have heard anything from me in fact.

Erm, sorry about that. I tend to dislike writing blog posts because I have this fear that I'll say something really stupid. That's also the main reason I've started answering comments less. I know, it's kinda dumb, but... anyway.

    Problems With Conviction

I've decided that rather than doing a simple word for word conversion of Conviction, it would be better to rewrite the majority of the story. Basically, all the events will remain the same, but hopefully the it will be less awkward to read than a straight word for word edit. This will also give me a chance to fix a bunch problems Conviction had. The purpose of this blog post is to discuss what I

    Tiiiimbeeeer!

Conviction is coming down in the next hour. Just a heads up for anyone who wanted to save it, but hasn't gotten the chance yet. I'll be making another blog post tomorrow, talking about my plans for the future in regards to writing, as well as divulging a few details about where Conviction's plot was eventually going to go.

So, in a previous blog post, some people requested that I keep them updated on my writing. Well, this is me doing that.

So, first things first, the thing I'm working on right now is not Conviction. It's an original, unrelated story called For Want of a Better End, which is basically a modern fantasy story. I figure writing in this genre for my first novel might be a good idea, because it's fairly popular right now and it won't be as hard to convince a publisher to take it up. The story is about two people, Malarie Parks and Will Schaefer, who both have very different experiences and history with magic and the creatures of folk lore. I'm not sure how many details I should divulge as to the plot and characters, but for now I can safely assure you that it will have all the standbys of my usual writing. You know, really dark crap happening to innocent people, moral grey zones, anti heroes, and lots and lots of violence.

As for Conviction, it's easily my favourite story of all the stuff I've worked on. Even though it's not going to be my first novel, I absolutely want to get it published one day. I've had Slight in my head for so long, and she's a character I'm really attached to. The thing is, I'm now considering making Conviction much larger, and much more epic in scope and scale. Ever since I was a kid reading Deltora Quest, I've had a strong love for the massive multi-books sagas like Wheel of Time, Cavern of Black Ice, Sword of Truth (even though that one was really really really shit), and other '[noun] of [verb]' stories. I want to write something like that.

Kind of.

The idea of Slight is that she's a minor villain in someone else's story. Conviction never quite made it that far, but Starswirl The Bearded was going to play a major role in the story, basically functioning as a stand in for Rand Althor/Richard Rahl/Raif Sevrance and other angsty 'chosen one' characters. Over the course of the story, Equestria was going to undergo massive political and cultural changes, with all of Equestria's maps being redrawn, religions being broken, and just the general large scale turbulence that results from losing a goddess. Slight was going to unintentionally play the role of something along the lines of the ring wraiths from Lord of the Rings, or Ra'zac from Eragon.

I want to keep that aspect for the ponyless version of this story. But at the same time, I want the whole story to be a bit... bigger.

Anyway, that's all I wanted to talk about for now.

Be sure to keep us updated if the rewritten version ends up available for purchase somewhere.

Any plans on the horizon to continue Penumbra? Or is that one just not inspiring you enough?

Penumbra is an odd duck. I like the story, and I want to reuse a lot of the idea from it, but I don't really see how it would be possible to just convert it into a normal story. I have some ideas, but nothing concrete for the moment.

2078135 Well I absolutely loved the premise and atmosphere you created for that one. Made my mind conjure some pretty images.

Same. I'm not a big fan of FoE. I keep rereading Penumbra and finding little things I missed in previous readings.

Be careful with popular. A lot of publishers hate popular stories because by the time stories start pouring in trying to capitalize on popular, the market is saturated. So only unique takes even get a chance. At least the one you picked is more of a genera than a theme.
