I think revenge is my favorite reason... · 9:08am Apr 25th, 2014
If I had to pick a reason for a villain to be a villain it would be revenge. While it is just as used as ambition I feel like deep down revenge is something we all can relate to, more so than most other reasons. Whether it is the urge to give a bully a punch to the face or to attack those who attempted to wipe out your kind. Revenge is something done in response. Something had to happen to drown someone in revenge. If they aren't careful revenge will turn to blind anger and hate and lead down a whole different path.
My other favorite reason is probably the deep belief that what the villain was doing is the right thing. An example of this is general zod from man of steel. Ignoring some plot holes and such Michael Shannon's portrayal was not a zod who desired to rule but instead a zod that genuinely served and believed krypton could rise again. I'm sure he thought that genocide wasn't the best answer but it was the quickest and surest way to bring krypton back.
My third favorite is the "just because" villain. This would like the joker, discord, etc. I think these guys are refreshing but they are hard to pull off. Sure they give no fucking but that doesn't mean they have to be bats hit crazy. ..except for the joker....see what I did there? Seriously though think of the joker. He is called crazy but if anything his mind is scientific. He plays Jenga with the sheer desire to see what happens when he pulls out a block. He plays halo not to win or kill but to see your ration when he gets out of the map with a super jump. This is like I said refreshing but... I prefer someone with a driven intent toward those who receive their wrath.
Sigh random thoughts at 4am...
Not totally random I suppose seeing as I am thinking about villains in my fic. It's hard trying to make them unique. Because like most stories and like most people there is only a few endings possible for them. It's the middle of a story, and how that correlates to the beginning and end, that matter.
Sigh I hate auto correct on phones. I read over this and found many mistakes
2045103 yea I was thinking about luna as well as a new villain. Can't spoil anything but in due time you will find out more. I'm just worried about how to make the new villain fit in and just how deeply he or she will effect certain characters.
I like the just because villains because I can understand their philosophy. I don't agree with it, but it makes a form of twisted sense. Supervaillains who do it for money? They could probably make more money by hiring out their power to companies. But the crazy ones have the perfect logic: they don't follow logic.
2046046 I like them to but they are very hard to pull off and hard to place in a story. It's hard to create a joker like character that's fits in well. I'm talking in relation to my stories of course.
Yeah I'm not a fan of the money seekers... I think they make better side villains than main ones.
Another example could be Sunnytown from Story Of The Blanks. When Ruby got her Cutie Mark, Greyhoof killed Ruby then burned her body. Greyhoof most likely did this because the only mention of "marks" appearing on ponies were from stories about Cutie Pox. If they did think that Ruby had Cutie Pox, then they probably saw their actions as a mercy kill and the only way to prevent the disease from spreading.
Oh, yeah, revenge villains are a lot of fun to work with. They've always been my favorite.
