Drive safely, folks! · 5:57pm Dec 31st, 2013

Good morning folks, or afternoon if that's more accurate. I'd like to take a moment to wish everyone happy holidays and all that jazz as well as remind folks in the colder climates that safe driving is something to always keep in mind when you're out on the road.

What brings this on, you might ask? My sterling driving record is no longer perfect despite my best efforts. I was on the way to a doctor's appointment when I hit a solid sheet of ice on a bridge. Traffic had slowed to a crawl at the other end of the bridge and I ended up sliding the entire length of said bridge due to the ice and rear-ending the car at the other end of the bridge. I am fine, and the other driver is fine also, but my poor car took a hit that's going to need serious work to repair.

So! For everyone who's out travelling for the holidays, be safe, and go super slow if you think there's ANY ice.

Gad to see at least you're okay, bro. But yeah, I feel you there. In my case, my first driving-through-snow experience was from Grand Rapids to Detroit in the middle of a snow storm. It was nerve-wracking... ever since, whenever I drive in snowy lands, I drive a lot more carefully.

A wise precaution. In my case it was the bridge that got me. Fun fact! Bridges will often be covered in ice because the surface of the road is suspended above the ground and is quicker to freeze. The road before and after the bridge might be perfectly fine but that silly, silly bridge... >: (

1667827 That is exactly what freaks me out the most... black ice, or surfaces that just suddenly are there and even if you're being careful, you lose control or can't break. :applejackunsure:

Thank The God you are fine :pinkiegasp:

I don't know about icy road (considering I am living at Equator) but I have seen enough video to know how dangerous the frozen black ice (seen Wanderer D comment)

Also my first accident involve me riding a motorcylce with my siblings....crashing to electric box (thank God that my sibling is fine especially 2 years old lil bro of mine, though the motor frame broke badly and I got tons of bruise and scrape...surprisingly my dad laugh at my pain)

1667840

I don't know if I could ever ride a motorcycle to actually travel. Too much can potentially go wrong, IMHO.

1667870

Well I don't know what you like but I like the wind blowing through as I sped through the road, though I am not really a speedster so I try to ride carefully. (Compare to my friends which they all are speed demon, we call them 'Mat Rempit' which mean 'Dude who use motorcycle and race like asshole')

Yes, it can go INCREDIBLY wrong at anytime moment but as long you stay vigilant to the road and not driving like asshole, you will be fine and also I can go take any shortcuts available :pinkiehappy: :scootangel:

My solution to this is nailed tires. A hundred little metal spikes > icy roads.

(apparently better known as Studded Winter Tires.)

1667898
Provided you can use them. They are illegal where I'm from, aside from specific racing situations and then only with the permission of the road owner.

1667919
I live in Iceland. Winter tires are basically mandatory half of the year.

I know how that goes. I hit a deer on Halloween that made a blemish on my driving record as well.

1667923
That would explain it. Here, in Poland, we can only use snow chains. Obviously only on snow...
and two years ago there was, like, -30 or so for at least two weeks... in a city...
But perhaps the correct course here is to ask: Does The Law in Arad's whereabouts allow those?

Regardless, ice on the bridge is a very serious issue. Almost any raised bridge that I know of has this sign before it that basically means "Warning, this thing will have ice on it!" Not necessarily only in winter...

Anyhow, good to know you're okay, Arad! Take it easy for a while! This kind of experience is always nerve-wracking, be it the event itself or its aftermath. Relax and have some fun!

And Happy (early) New Year!:pinkiehappy:
Well, early for me, it's 8PM here.

Glad to hear noone was hurt!
Cars can be repaired, but people... actually, people can be repaired too... I guess that saying doesn't really work. Repairing people is a bit more of a hassle, I suppose, but if you could end up like the 6 million dollar man that'd be awesome...

I forget what I as saying!

Anyway, I hope the dent in your car doesn't put too much of a dent in your wallet. :twilightoops:
Happy Christmas!

Dude, glad you're okay! *HUGS!* Cars can be repaired... lives are more precious...

You said yourself that you are alright. But I still feel worried.

Okay, reply time.

1667887

I won't argue that a skilled driver can be perfectly (well, relatively) safe on a motorcycle. My worries usually tend to stem from OTHERS on the road.

I had actually replaced my tires just this summer with an entirely new set, and one of them got blown out in the accident. : (

1667935

If my memory serves, the north american white-tail deer is the most dangerous animal in the united states because of accidents like that.

1667949

Its city driving where I am so I don't know if they allow the heavy duty tire accessories on the city roads. Now the dirt country roads you can do whatever you want so long as you don't destroy the road in the process.

And I find myself surprisingly unstressed by the event. My only reaction thus far has been a low-level simmering anger at it happening. Had I made a few other choices then the accident could have been avoided entirely. (For instance, spending the night at my parents the day before when I visited rather than going home immediately).

Repaired you say?

...Maybe not.

1668073

Thanks! :)

At this point I'm more worried about two things: One, the poor guy I hit taking legal action, which is a headache I do NOT want, and two, the insurance companies deciding to bend me over the table. I have -never- had a good experience with an insurance company.

This is my -first- accident, EVER, yet I'm almost willing to bet they'll take the opportunity to put the thumb screws to me.

Regarding the next chapter of Stardust, I'll see how far I can get with it. I might still make my deadline but I can't guarantee that now. :(

1668279

Man, Stardust can wait. This is a major thing. Take a couple-few days if you have to! We'll be here, not to worry.

The bridge wasn't paying attention. This is not your fault.

1668279

I agree, OTHERS sometime drive like asshole which disregard safety of the other drivers, including themselves

You can only hope that guy didn't take legal action and wish good luck with Insurance company and also take your time with Stardust :pinkiehappy: We can wait:pinkiehappy:

1668292

I took it easy today but I'll get some work done tomorrow. I can't say how much, but I'll try.

1668343

Stupid bridges. >_>

1669197

I don't know if there would be any charges levied, since the cops didn't even ask what happened. They asked if I was alright and if I'd need a tow, and if I had my insurance and drivers liscence. They gave me the incident report and that was that.

I don't know if I mentioned this or not but the accident occurred at 10:00AM CST. Prior to that there had been FOUR accidents today. I think the police are -well aware- of that silly bridge.

"the accident occurred at 10:00AM CST. Prior to that there had been FOUR accidents today. I think the police are -well aware- of that silly bridge."

Sounds like the cops aren't even going to ding anybody, if that's the case. You might have to worry about the other driver, but not the cops.

I'm from Florida and I wish to know what's going on with your ice problem. Did people dump all their ice cubes from their freezers on the road or something?

1670037

Ah, it probably mean you are fine from being charged since the cops already know there are going to be accidents happen because of the ice. Well I only hope the insurance doesn't give you much problem though.

Anyway have a great year and I wish you well in life :pinkiehappy:

Oh yeah.... to make up for your bad times

I just read and Im happy that asside from some minor material damage nothing serious happend.
As many already commented Im with you on the blemished drive record. I was just a minor dent happend from not seeing a gateway post (or whatever) while reversing out of a driveway.
Best wishes for new year! o/

ended up sliding the entire length of said bridge due to the ice

Ha, pinkie be like WWOOOOOOO!!!! :pinkiehappy:dashie.mylittlefacewhen.com/media/f/img/mlfw120_130118872239.jpg

Pretty much the same thing just happened to me the other day. Ruined my perfect driving record too. :pinkiesad2:
