Just a heads up, this blog will contain a few spoilers, mainly that of Dust to dust and possible some of the other HiE stories related to it. If you haven't read it and want to, or just doesn't want it spoiled, you might want to skip this. Otherwise, stick around and give me your opinions, please.
So, I've been thinking. Ashfall. When I decided on that name, I wasn't exactly sure on why I took it, guess I just wanted to follow the theme of Dust to dust. While it may sound fitting for such a hopeless story, it occurred to me it is in fact, very wrong. Why? Let me explain. With Dust to dust, I chose that name because it fits the character and story. I mean, it follows Dust through almost his entire life, and just like everyone else, he'll eventually turn to nothing but dust. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust and all that.
Then there's also the fact that throughout the story, Dust is pretty much falling apart due to his own actions, while struggling to keep it together at the same time. He's crumbling, in a way, fighting himself every waking moment of every day. That's why the name Dust to dust makes sense; it explains the entire story through just two simple words.
Now, this is where Ashfall comes into play. Think about the name. What does it say, what does it mean? To me, it literally meant the fall of a certain character, who is yet to be revealed, but will soon. Thought that would fit well together with Dust to dust, that definitive description. But, I was wrong. See, it doesn't work because this character doesn't "fall" in this story. In fact, it'll be there for the long run, until the very end of the next two stories I have planned. No, as a matter of fact, this character is born through this first story, in a way. It's where it all starts, and therefor I'm thinking of changing the name to fit that theme better.
Born of Ash? Forged in Ash/Ashes? My mind can't think of a name that doesn't sound cliche or silly. So.. could anyone help? Anyone have any ideas for a new name? I realize that changing the name of a story halfway through is a bit radical, but I feel it really has to be done to fit the theme. This means that I'll just have to remake the cover image, which shouldn't take too long.
Oh, and another thing. If you've read Dust to dust but don't like Ashfall because it's so different from the first story, which I know some of you do, I have this to say; Don't think of it as a proper sequel. Think of it as the "real" story, where Dust to dust served as a prequel, building up to the meat of it all. In that aspect, it's actually Dust to dust that's different. Hope that helps in some way..
