So! Episode three!

Wow, this episode brought it, and it brought it good—I just love everything about this episode, from the humor, to the details on the inside of the castle, to how the characters are just at. Their. Best.

It’s great. Lion gave this episode a five star, and I have to agree. Like, Lion didn’t like the season premiere, which I did. But now that this episode has aired, I’m able to make a comparison and realize that the season premiere was kinda missing some elements—but regardless of that, I think it’s a solid two-parter as those go.

Because, let’s face it; those episodes are usually not the best. And it’s understandable—the writers and voice actors are getting back into the groove again, and everything.

For those who don’t know—the writer of this episode is a new member of the writing staff, and MLP overall. For a new member, he has a wonderful grasp of the characters. Truly, truly impressed me.

I was especially impressed with how all the characters had completely equal screen time—it was almost down to a fucking art. I’ve watched the episode two times now—I always have to do that since the first time I’m always just too excited to have fresh poni to really appreciate anything specific about the episode.

Except, ya know, the Pie. Which was excellent in this episode, btw. Wonderful, wonderful dialogue. Lion called it her best in the series, and I’m inclined to agree.

That being said—dat AppleDash. Hgnn.

For those who don’t know—it’s not my favorite ship. In fact, it’s my least favorite. Like, I see how it makes sense, since they’re able to connect on a basic level with being generally competitive athletes, but I feel like they’re just too similar. I see them as the best of friends—bros even—but not romantically. That being said, I hold nothing against those who like them. I just… don’t.

Also, is it me, or was the Rarity in this episode excellent? I’ve been watching Tommy Oliver and Digibrony for the past several hours, and Rarity is Tommy’s absolute favorite (as well as Lion’s and I talk to him every day) so Rarity has hopelessly risen herself to spot number two in my best pony line, right behind, you guessed it, Pinkie Pie.

This naturally means that RariPie is now the finest of horse shippings. Alas, dear RainbowPie, I hardly knew ye. But let’s face it—RainbowPie is gone like the first season is gone. Le miserable sigh.

Anyway, the other thing that I’m inclined to talk about is the Fluttershy and Angel thingy throughout the episode—Flutters seems to be the only one who doesn’t come to the castle with a set purpose and instead laterally just kinda follows Rarity in there. Actually, I think Rarity asked Flutters to come, although I have no idea why. I feel like Flutters’s whole freak out over Angel was… bland. Like, she was utterly fearless for herself and instead freaked out way too unnecessarily over Angel.

Regardless of my thoughts on it, however, it is in fact very true to character. She cares more about her animals’ safety than she does her own. And Angel is her personal pet. But I just… didn’t care for it.

At first I thought Angel was also grossly out of character—and he was. You can’t argue that, he was waayy too sweet. But now I’m thinking that this fact was pretty okay with me—hell, he was freaking adorable. That face when he realized that it was him how set off the trap door? Poor guy. And that affectionate nuzzle with Flutters was so cute.

Twilight in this episode was pretty small in her role—but the parts that she did have were very much in tune with that whole ‘she’s become more level headed and mature’ thing that we see since her becoming an alicorn. In this episode she is utterly calm and relaxed about being in a creepy castle, and seemingly unafraid about confronting Pinkie. Maybe she’s grown in confidence about the fact that she’s a freaking alicorn now—an extremely powerful mage.

Also, I chuckled at that bookgasm. T’was wonderful. I react the same way, actually.

Once again, I give this episode five stars. It was humorous and the characters were great. Also, there was that continuity with Twilight looking for anything about the keys to the box, which was very nice since MLP has notoriously horrible continuity.
