Enemy Within Achievements Unveiled. Also, rampant speculation. · 1:16pm Sep 13th, 2013

As Enemy Unknown and now Enemy Within is a significant influence on this fic (being a crossover and all), and I know I have several readers that play EU, I felt it important to note that the placeholder achievements for Enemy Unknown in Steam have been updated with REAL achievements.

As the following MAY BE considered spoilers, you can continue at your own risk. Possible spoilerish text will be in yellow, highlight for easier reading.

I won't break down every single one but I'll give you the basics of what hasn't been announced yet if I'm reading between the lines correctly:

It was speculated that there will be human enemies of a sort due to the title and some achievements seem to indicate this as well. Specifically, killing enemy 'Snipers' and 'Medics' in various ways. The icon for the achievements are also humans wearing the vest/tie/shirt getup that a lot of characters wear from The Bureau. if you're familiar with it.

Combine this point with two other achievements involving locating the "new threat's" location as well as dealing with it, it adds further evidence of this. The icon for those two achievements is a hexagonal badge with a very similar aesthetic to XCOM's badge, with what looks like an eye above a planet's horizon with a single four-pointed star in the planet itself. Perhaps a shadow organization? Traitors and collaborators? The possibilities are tantalizing to consider. The achievement name for defeating this new menace is 'Apotheosis Denied' and that -strongly- leads me to believe that this organization would be assisting the aliens in allowing humanity to 'ascend'.

The second is -potentially- spoilers but I think it's more just a gameplay reveal than an actual plot reveal.

That is... BASE DEFENSE! There's three achievements that strongly hint that this will be added. One achievement is 'They Shall Not Pass' which involves defeating 'all alien waves'. Since we don't have a wave-based mission yet, that would imply it's being added with this game. The second achievement is 'Elite Defense' which is 'Beat a new special mission without losing any assets.' This could be interpreted as a general defense mission, perhaps of VIPs or whatever. But it's the third achievement that really seals the deal.

'All Hands on Deck.' Get at least 4 kills with XCOM Base Security Personnel.

And with that, my speculation is finished. Please feel free to add your own comments!

As my Spoiler warning at the top notes, things of spoilery nature will be discussed so DO NOT GO TO COMMENTS if you don't want to see them!

Current popular theory on the hexagonal icon is Cult of Sirius from XCOM Apocalypse.

God, I loved delivering mindless destruction to their temples.

But yea, makes sense. They're humans that believe the aliens will redeem humanity.

EDIT: Since this is somewhat spoilerific, I decided to yellowize this.

Blaster bombs. Blaster bombs EVERYWHERE.

I'm not here to just kill you guys, I'm here to BURN THIS PLACE TO THE GROUND.

I'm pumped for base assaults. Love me some defense missions.

Whoa... I'd heard nothing about this new game! Dang! And to think, I'm just getting back into Unknown... I think I have me a new title to pick up for Christmas...

1346752

It's not quite a new game. It's somewhere between an expansion and sequel to EU. Kinda like EU 1.5. New content, new tech, new classes, new upgrades, new maps, new enemies, but the same basic game is still there. Loads of new stuff though. Going to have so much fun in November.

1346757

And hey, multiplayer! Are you thinkin' what I'm thinkin'?

Four sided star? Wouldn't that just be a square?

I have to add something: XCom base defense personal is directly mentioned in one of the achievements, so I'd say base defence is more or less confirmed.

Yes! Yes yes yes!

Oh God, I waited so long for them to add base defense.
I absolutely loved that in the old games, especially the fact the battle map accurately reflected base layout.

Looks like an another playthrough is a go!
Still gotta finish the Impossible run, though. I'm getting raped so hard...

1346768

...That I should have my soldiers shoot themselves in the head to save everyone some time? Seriously, I suck at competitive multiplayer.

1346776

Yeah, base defense has me really excited!

1346740 Ooh, I hated those bastiges. Of course, raiding them was a good was to refill my coffers or give some rookies needed mission experience.

1346778
competitive nothing, I was thinking co-op! I'd love to play with you!

1346786

Another reason for me to finally PLAY the classic games I got with The Bureau.

1346799

I wasn't aware there was co-op. Was that recently announced? :O

1346804

That's the idea I got from the site... maybe one of us mis-read it? I thought the implication was for both co-op AND competitive...

1346811

Which site? Its possible something got updated and I just didn't notice. : |

1346812

This one here: http://www.xcom.com/enemywithin/us/

I was under the impression that there would be both co-op and competitive... but maybe I wasn't awake enough to parse that properly?

1346820

The multiplayer section seems to indicate it's the same one vs one head to head style multiplayer that EU had.

1346833

Well, drat. and here I was hoping for co-op base defense.

1346840

Which would have been awesome. But sadly, no. :( Heck, would have loved to have had coop tactics at least. Maybe 2 squads of 4, with larger groups of enemies.

1346775
Nope. The squad size upgrade icon is the nicest looking XCOM related 4-pointed star I can find. Enjoy the 5 4-pointed stars.

1347041

Indeed. That's such a missed opportunity.

Add multiple objectives, more enemies... oh the lost opportunities.

1347080

Maybe a future expansion?

1346757

I imagine it'll be like Brave New World was for Civ 5. It's technically the same "campaign," but the updates completely alter the dynamics of a playthrough. There will be more research and foundry paths to pursue, but it sounds like the opposition will be seriously expanded as well.

Plus it'll have some much needed balancing (I was amazed that not a single one of their changes was objectionable!). Assault and sniper got buffs to their weaker halves (and squad-sight got a slap on the wrist), Support's ability to make reaction shots at targets when they fire will finally occur before they shoot. Every soldier can get access to 2 item slots. And Ghost Armor loses the (hilariously overpowered) auto-crit.

I am excited for this update. I haven't had the chance to look at the new achievements yet, but I am planning to tonight. One thing that makes me sad is that the Long War mod won't work if they patch vanilla, which I bet they will.

1347529
I'm not the only one who plays Long War?
Awesome!

1348377

I tried playing Long War. I was not successful. Couldn't get it to run. :(

1348386
1) Make a backup of XCOM
2) Put Steam in offline mode
3) Install long war
4) Run from steam

1348514

I might have to do it that way. I tried to do a fancy schamsy way so I could have steam Online while I played but no dice. Offline mode it seems will be best.

Although I've also had problems with Steam refusing to play ANY game in offline mode recently, but that's a bridge I'll burn when I get to it.

1348535
Yea, they patched the fancy shmancy way.

1348553 Did they just patch it recently? I only installed Long War this week, using the fancy schmancy way.

1350968
I think they changed the server IP address, so the fancy shmancy way changed, and I honestly can't be bothered to go fix it in hosts.

Spolierlicious: The new faction is called EXALT, and yeh, basically Cult of Osiris with Bureau's sick threads.

And one of the interviewers said to a developer: "Base defense. That's a statement, not a question." One Achievement is "All Hands on Deck: Get at least 4 kills with XCOM Base Security personnel."

Oh, and did you find the Lightning Cannon in The Bureau? it's actually fairly well-hidden, and I need to test if I think you have to do a certain thing to get it.

Specifically, the playthrough I found it on: after the Spire mission, you get to test the prototype in the lab. All the other times, I tested it the third time, so it exploded, and I didn't find it those times, though I can't remember well if it was in that spot or not. The time I DID find it, what I did was only test it twice, so it fired sucessfuly, but didn't explode.

ya'll should definitely check out the wiki page, there are alot of spoilers there along with confirmations for myths(and a few that you predicted pretty well, such as the base guards not wearing full armor)

Derpdederp I forgot about this blog post.

1410538

I did actually. I blew up the lightning cannon during testing, then found it later. Didn't know it was a secret. : |

1415667

Is that UFOpaedia or a different wiki?

And regarding my predictions and my future plans, I am -pleasantly- surprised at just how much of my plans are coinciding with EW.

1415720
This one

and this video was certainly interesting concerning exalt

1415720 Allright, all my test show that it doesn't matter if you blow up the prototype. It's just in a spot that's hard to notice, and I guess I missed it the first times.

I don't know if you've seen this yet but it certainly looks like some kind of base defense is likely.:pinkiehappy:

Since I kept getting my ass handed to me before I could discover how it goes, what did the original Base Defense missions feel like?
