Mariusioannesp Reviews: My Little Pony: Equestria Girls · 6:44pm Sep 1st, 2013
September 1, 2013
Today was the television premiere of "My Little Pony: Equestria Girls" on The Hub. For many a Brony, I imagine this is the first chance they had to see it. I, on the other hand, was one of the few, the happy few, this band of Bronies who made the effort to see in theaters on June 16th. I live close to New York so it wasn't too bad. I then subsequently made a review and posted it on YouTube.
What I said then for the most part still stands.
If only Lyra was here!
Best part of the movie in a nutshell!
However, there were some things about the TV edition that I did not like. One of the best things about Equestria Girls were these little jokes referring back to the show and stuff. A couple of those that I really liked were cut. Like an early scene in the library with the CMC and Cheerilee and Trixie's cameo. A song early in the film was also cut as well. Also, they cut Twilight accepting Flash's second attempt to ask her to the dance close to end, which I felt made them hanging out at the dance at the end not make that much sense. Worst part though is they cut Derpy's appearance in the credits!
Speaking of Flash, despite hearing some disdain for him from some of my fellow Bronies over the summer, I remain unashamed to say that I liked Flash. If you're at all curious, that's the reason he makes a small cameo appearance in "Snowy Night".
I mean look at him!
If I was back in high school, and he was at my high school, I'd like to be his friend! Isn't that the whole point of My Little Pony?! Plus, if his car is a Chevy Camaro, it could be Bumblebee from Transformers for all we know. I feel he is probably the best thing to come out of this movie.
Case in point, here are some pretty good fanfictions based on Equestria Girls about our good ole' friend Flash Sentry.
A Guard and a Princess by TorontoFCBrony
This one is a fun little romantic comedy detailing the amusing aspects of Flash's courtship of Twilight. However there is a promise that there will be adventure in the future. I say you should stay tuned for that.
To My Princess, on the Day of My Departure by D G D Davidson
A short, emotionally charged two part story told in letters from Flash and Twilight. It gets props for also being based on the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic comic book "The Return of Queen Chrysalis".
I'd also like to point our attention to a commercial that aired during the Equestria Girls premiere for a new show on The Hub called Spooksville (or something like that). The teenaged protagonists of the show (presumably) were watching Equestria Girls, and they get into a little argument over whether the characters are better as ponies or humans. Once again, Hasbro making a joke about us Bronies.
On a final note, if you watched my video review, you recall that my biggest complaint about Equestria Girls was that the characters were not human-colored. I also note that some of the humanized fan art depicts Twilight and Rarity as Asian.
This music video to promote the premiere was released on Entertainment Weekly's website a few days ago.
It's almost as if Hasbro's been listening to me for once. As Fluttershy would say "Yay."
So overall, I still liked My Little Pony: Equestria Girls. However, I highly encourage anyone who liked the premiere to get the DVD or download it tomorrow when it becomes available to get the full, uncut version.
I'd ask what you all thought of it, but I'm scared.
God bless you all. God bless America. And God bless Equestria.
They. Cut. Derpy?!?!?!?!?!?!
HOW DARE YOU HASBRO?
1322294 I know right!
i agree its better to watch it on dvd when its unedited
1322518 It was bad enough when there were just rumors that they were going to completely remove Derpy from the fourth season, but this......just, no. THINK OF ALL THE SAD BRONIES IF DERPY GETS DELETED.
1323527 Don't fret my friend. In the theatrical cut of Equestria Girls, an image of a human Derpy appears at the end of the credit roll, like one of those post-credit things in a Marvel movie. I'm sure she was cut from the credits of television version because on TV the credits are relegated to a corner, and you wouldn't have been able to see her anyway. I doubt she's been cut from season 4 since she made a few appearances in the season 3 finale.

I think that's just because of the tv. I hate to watch movies on tv because they cut out the credits and I love watching the credits
