Canterlot WIP · 9:12am Jul 3rd, 2013
Today I started an illustration for the upcoming interlude chapter, of Canterlot. Partly also because I just wanted to paint it.
People never make it look enough like an actual city, if you ask me. Which is natural, I suppose, because in the show it's stylized as basically the castle and nothing else. But I wanted to make Canterlot look big enough to actually contain things like a hedge maze or parade grounds.
Now that the buildings are mostly blocked in, though, I'm gonna have to add some more Canterlot-specific detail like flags and filigree so it looks properly charming and fairy tale-like.
Supposedly Minas Tirith was the inspiration for Canterlot, but it always makes me think of another high-altitude castle.
Looks pretty high-tech. Must look even more so in unicorn-vision.
Hey, maybe skip the filigree and add some greebles. And... Tesla coils or something. Who said fairy tails need to be all frou-frou?
I usually stick to a commenting policy of first asking myself if I have anything substantial to say, and if no, then I don't say anything. I'm gonna skip that this time.
*Ahem* Huuuugheurrrughummmbleumgraugh uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrmmmmunnngling.
I do actually have two questions: Is the slight blurriness from whatever technique you use, or is it stylistic? And bleurglefurgle, howisthatsoawesome?

I think filigree and flags are just Fantasy greebles... Like how air conditioners, fire hydrants, and advertisements are modern-day ones.

Haha, glad you like it!
That's a function of the technique so far. It's not finished, though - It's already shaping up to be a lot crisper, thought it will still be kinda soft and painterly.
