Ah earth ponies, they may not have the magical powers of unicorns or the flying abilities of pegasi but they're far from useless. So which ones are good enough to make my list?
10. The Mayor a.k.a Mayor Mare
Considering everything that's happened to Ponyville since Twilight moved in The Mayor's tenure has been anything but dull. In fact it seems like every time we see her she's dealing with some new crisis or event. Kind of makes you wonder what kind of stuff she puts up with on a daily basis and what the ponies think of her doesn't it?
9. Braeburn
A fairly hardworking but fun loving stallion Braeburn is a member of the Apple Family and potentially the head of the settlers in Appleloosa. At least he's actually willing to consider all options and doesn't always assume his side is right. I honestly think he'd make a better sheriff then Sheriff Silver Star considering what he did during the whole buffalo land dispute. He's also one of the few stallions on the show and though he's only popped up twice he's still a fairly popular character for ship fics, most recently it seems like fans are shipping him with Rarity under the whole opposites attract thing. You have to admit he's got a bit more Southern Charm going for him.
8. Octavia Melody
Yes that's right Octavia's last name has been confirmed by Hasbro's toyline. I already talked a lot about her but what's intresting is that her palet swap character Fiddlesticks popped up again in "Apple Family Reunion" and some fans have suggested that Fiddlesticks is Octavia's mom. Intresting idea wouldn't you agree?
7. Granny Smith
At first Granny Smith was little more then your typical old person character. She was mostly used for old people jokes when she did appear which wasn't all that often. "Family Appreciation Day" tried to flesh her out and showed why she acts so odd but it only partially worked. "Apple Family Reunion" accomplished the task and I would love to see Grany Smith be written like this more often now. After all old characters often tend to make for the greatest sage characters. What's intresting is that Granny Smith's family settled in Ponyville while she was still just a filly and Filthy Rich's wealth comes from his ancestor selling the zap apple jam. Also now that I think about the CMC never tried to find out if Granny Smith had any sort of secrets they could use for a new Gabby Gums article, probably for the best they didn't.
6. Cheerilee
A snarky and cheerful teacher is always a welcome change from the usual bland and one dimensional "boring" teachers. I hope we see more of her in Season 4, especially back when she had that 80's mane cut. Or perhaps we could learn more about her school days with Rarity and whether the two of them still hang out or not.
5. Big Macintosh
The first and most reoccurring stallion on the show Big Macintosh is a stallion of few words. But he's generally smarter then his sister Applejack. I'm looking forward to seeing what IDW has planned for him in the upcoming Main Series #9 and #10. Also it might be nice to have an episode from his perspective, perhaps one in a parody of "A Hard Day's Night" that has his constantly trying to avoid mares? Plus it might be nice to see more of his interaction with not only his family but Applejack's friends, hey don't look at me like that Fluttermac shippers.
4. Apple Bloom
At times Apple Bloom's cuteness can rival even that of Sweetie Belle's and much like Big Macintosh she seems to be smarter then her sister Applejack. I am hopeful that she'll get a good episode in Season 4 considering how poorly "The Cutie Pox" was. At times though her sister relationship with Applejack can become too perfect, I like it best when it shows they don't always agree like in "Briddle Gossip" and "Call of The Cutie".
3. Babs Seed
What can I say I just love her accent, it's so cute. Plus the fact that she has a bit of a chubbier design then the other colts and fillies we've seen so far really helps promote diversity and that it's o.k. to be different. I am a little bummed she stopped doing that thing with her mane after "One Bad Apple" but I can understnad how that reflects the fact that she's no longer shy and can stand up for herself. If she shows up again in Season 4 I'd like her to meet the rest of the mane six and maybe even interact with them a little bit. I can imagine she and Fluttershy would have a lot in common.
2. Applejack
Even if that times she's written as a sage character when she's got noticeable flaws she's still a pretty good character and breaks away from a sterotype that's used way too much in other media. Her biggest strength and problem is that her character almost entirley revolves around her family and putting others before herself. When Applejack gets more episodes in Season 4 they should be ones that affect her personally and really make her question her character. Well I guess there's always the IDW Micro Series though they did kind of slip up on Twilight and Rainbow Dash.
1. Pinkie Pie
Why can't more people strive to be like her? She's easily one of the most selfless characters of all time. "Smile, Smile, Smile" was the best song of all time so far and I doubt anything will ever top that. Ironically enough she has a pretty tragic backstory and one that could really make for good episode material. Her "alternative personality" Pinkamina further shows just how tragic and fragile she really is. There are still a lot of people who don't understand her, assume she's dumb, or assume her cutie mark only makes her good for throwing parties. Pinkie Pie is perhaps the most complex character out of the entire cast and one of those characters that is actually a lot smater then you might think. A nice reference to the fact that her voice actrees Andrea Libman has a degree in Engineering.

Actually I think Fiddlesticks may be Octavia's twin sister. Of course that's just me.
1168718 I think she is her sister as well, but maybe not twin.
Also I really don't like opposite attract romances, just doesn't seem realistic at all to me.
As for the list I have to agree with it.
1168764 Well maybe not twin sisters, Octavia has to be the older one by at least two-three years? Of course there is a fan theory that Octavia might be related to the Apple Family through Fiddlesticks.
