Interesting thoughts while writing... · 2:34am Dec 30th, 2012
So, yeah... Like the title says, this one is just my thoughts while I've been writing Baser Instinct. Last blog I wrote about the crazy ideas I get while writing (and by the way, the Filly Rarity story idea is beating out the other--although that one still won't die. It's morphing into a whole other idea, and much darker than the fic I'm writing now).
Anyway, this time I'm writing about my opinions on the character themselves, and how I feel while writing them. I've had a few surprises so far.
1) Spike. I freaking love writing for Spike. He is my favorite male character in MLP (but of course, given the dearth of males, I suppose that doesn't sound like much), and he is constantly fighting everypony else for my number one. Will he get there? I have no clue, but he gives the others a run for their money. Plus, I'm having so much fun digging into his character and imagining how he would develop years after the canon show. Let's face it. He's living in a world which doesn't have a positive view on dragons and where his few experiences with his own kind have been disastrous in one way or another. Somewhere down the line, he's going to suffer some real angst fuel and already has, especially when he eventually grows into the size of other dragons on the show. Will he be allowed to stay in Ponyville? Will the Mane 6 even be alive when he does? That's why I like the classic It Takes A Village, but that's just about the only one I've seen. So... I had to write something in that very same spirit--even though mine is not as good.
And "Secret to My Excess" is one of my fav episodes...
2) Rarity. In my opinion, she is best pony. I love her because she is easily one of the most complex of the Mane 6, and she's just so fabulous! lol, ok, it's more than that. I have an artistic side myself and my future design work will be influenced by the demands of others, so I feel something in common with her character. Career demands can be stressful. Strangely, I disliked her at first until I saw "Suited for Success." She just so easy to misunderstand, and well...I like her for that also. Weird, eh? In Baser Instinct, she's serves as the love interest of Spike (because I love Sparity, and Sparity is just the perfect pairing to me. They aren't perfect, but they are made for each other. It's so freaking obvious in the show... Greed and Generosity. I could rant about this, but I should save that for another blog...). Anyway, she helps Spike challenge himself in her own way which may eventually lead him to learn what he needs to survive and grow in Equestrian society--and all the while looking fabulous! I so enjoy writing for Rarity. Seriously. I love writing for her. She's such an interesting character to write.
3) Twilight Sparkle. Can you believe I was indifferent about Twilight before this? My goodness, how could I have been? At first, I found it awkward to write for her, but soon I found it quite nice. Confound these ponies. They grow on me! One just cannot resist. Anyway, her adorkable personality just began to shine through, and Twilight as a character rose a few ranks in my book. Before, she reminded me somehow of Blossom from the Powerpuff Girls--a character which I was always annoyed by, such a know-it-all, and therefore I was indifferent to Twilight by extension--but Twilight's character actually has such adokable flaws... Ack! She's just so cute. I cannot help myself. Plus, I love her relationship with Spike. They grew up together, side by side; they're extremely close, and I like how the show makes light of it sometimes.
4) Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, and Pinkie Pie. In this fic, I can't focus on the rest of the Mane 6 like I would want, but I wanted (and still want) to explore their full characters during what screen time they would have. Personally, I love writing Applejack (Why don't people write more Applejack?), and I seriously wish I could get more Fluttershy in. She's just the most adorable pony to me, and I can relate to her. Sometimes I just feel like a Fluttershy, and I think most people do also. Rainbow Dash is awesome in whatever role you put her, and then there's Pinkie Pie. She was the hardest to write for me simply because I wanted to add a little weight to her character within the little screen time. I don't know--I just wanted something different than the "typical insane Pinkie" and the "typical hidden-just-under-the-surface insane Pinkamena." I mean, Pinkie puts so much stock, and even some of her self esteem I think, into her friends. She just wants to see other ponies happy. I don't think that side of her is displayed often enough.
5) Princess Celestia and Princess Luna. Oh ho... That shall be later on in the story...
6) Dragons. This is just my take on dragons. I can't give anyone spoilers. So MLP:FIM irked me over this subject: every sentient race in that world has complex societies--except dragons. Heck, even the diamond dogs looked like they had an organized society--no matter how primitive it may be, but every dragon on the show is either mean or a brute or getting his balls snatched up by super-Fluttershy. Besides being stronger than one another and hording, they don't seem to have much of a civilization at all. Meh... I just don't buy it, so I created my own little headcannon. It will be introduced later in the story.
7) Prince Blueblood. Don't like him very much, but I at least feel as if I should give him a motivation in this story. Yeah... I'm biased, I know. Leave me alone, ok?
8) Big McIntosh (Hasbro), Big Macintosh (everybody else I suppose). I like Big Mac. I'm sure he enjoys the swag one gets when one is experiencing the ratio of 10 girls to 1 guy. But, I'm going to expanding upon his character in this fic. I think I can do some interesting things with him.
9) Last, but not least, Davenport. You know, I feel like I've sort of assassinated the character of this background pony by simply creating a character for him--it's just an unsavory character. He's not all bad; he just has this outdated ideology that he devotes his life to. He will go to tartarus and back thinking that he is right in what he believes. Unfortunately, his ideology leads him into trouble in this fic. I "created" him not because I needed an antagonist (heck, we've got several in this fic), but because I need a character to go transform into an opposite of Spike to show the consequences of choice.
The so called moral of this fic I'll reveal after everything is over.

I'm really interested in seeing how you will deal with the dragons in your story. Most Spike stories (and the show itself) ignores the fact that he is a dragon. Keep it up!

I will agree with you on writing Spike and Rarity. Although he is not my most favorite character in the show (I'll admit that he doesn't even break top 5) I have to admit that writing him in fics is incredibly fun to do, although that MAY be because he's the only chracter that will grow up into a fire-breathing badass, and with that gives us a lot of creative freedom. Plus that and him and Rarity TOTALLY are meant to be with each other! God they're prefect for one another! Sparity for life!
Dragons are not barbaric, they're misunderstood! No pony ever gives them a chance. They did with Spike and look how well he turned out. If they just showed the dragons that they could get along and that friendship is magic I think we could have a socitey of dragons and ponies living together in harmony!
What I really want to see explored well are the changlings. And I would really want to see a return of Queen Chrysallis, but at the moment the comics will hold me over for that.

Shoot, I heard that the comics were good, but I haven't gotten around to ordering any yet. But I agree that a return of Chrysalis on the show would be amazing... I've read some of the better changeling fics that have some really cool ideas about their hierarchy, diet, etc.
And I would love to see an actual episode where the gang meets another dragon who is sensible, intelligent, and whatever because there is no way that only Spike can be the only "civilized" one. Besides, dragons are sentient. A sentient creature can be reasoned with. But after Dragon Quest, I don't think we'll get anything like this. Sadly...
Yep, all of the above will be in my fic. Not only does Spike need to learn about his dragon side, but also he needs to learn the truth about dragons and why he seems to be the only dragon living within pony society.

But anyways. Y'all seem to be quite interested in the whole world building thing. Something that I personally love. If I wasn't dead tired right now and it wasn't 2 in the morning and I just got back from work I would simply HAVE to check out that fic of yours... I guess I know what I'm doing tomorrow Mister of Missus Styrofoam (could you please tell me this now? I hate having to refer to both genders all the time)

Oh, and you HAVE to read the comics. If you are even the slightest of a Queen Chrysallis fan (I'm a huge one) you will simply adore it, darling

And yeah, I just have to share my headcanon with the world I suppose. I haven't gotten to it yet as Spike hasn't met the dragons. And it's Miss Styrofoam. Mister Styrofoam is my dad.
