I like writing about the worst day of a character's life; it lets us see the mettle inside. (Pronouns: RB/20 )

    Some books I love

I haven't produced much content lately. Just not feeling "pony." Been working on some space opera I might post to Royal Road or Amazon or something someday.

In light of my recent lack of content, have some of my favorite books:

Me: What did you learn in school today?

Kid: We learned about "SPQR" in ancient Rome.

    Me: Romanes eunt domes!

    Wife: What?

    Me: Don't worry about it.

    Always worth a re-read

I just re-read, for the sixth or eighth time, one of my all time favorite books:
Neptune's Inferno: The U.S. Navy at Guadalcanal, James D. Hornfischer

    Bibliophilia across generations

Kid: Daddy, I want to go to Barnes and Noble, please.
    Me: Sure. Why?
Kid: I want to read the first book in the "Warrior Cats" series.
Me: Reading is always encouraged in the house. Get in the car.

    <six hours later>

Kid: Finished! Can we order the next few books in the series?
    Me: <pride>

Anyway, I'm sick. Covid-negative but miserable, so probably flu or RSV. However, I've been reading.

Sea of Thunder: Four Commanders and the Last Great Naval Campaign 1941-1945
Good re-read. This follows Halsey, Kurita, Ugaki, and Ernest Evans across the Pacific War to their collision in Leyte Gulf. Good companion to Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors, which is one of my all time favorites.

Currently listening to the audiobook of Fire and Fortitude: The US Army in the Pacific War, 1941-1943, whose author often appears on the "We Have Ways" podcast. So far, so VERY good. I'm only in Chapter 3 (Bataan & Corregidor); Chapter 2 was the Philippines preparation and invasion, and Chapter 1 the Army's view of Pearl Harbor.

Get well soon

The derpiness is over 9000!

Get well soon :)

Dan

Around here, it's not uncommon for kids to learn to ski (and sometimes drive bobcats) before learning to ride a bike.

I keep telling my niece to practice free-heel telemarking (even if it's with randonee bindings, which are a total cheat), because the 10th Mountain Division would have never captured Riva Ridge, and the Finns would have never beat back the Red columns without such skills.

Everyone talks about that White Death guy, but he just had to stay still and conceal his breath. I'd like to see him get his heart rate up like a hoplite charging in full bronze kit, and then get it back down again in just a second or two and keep his hands steady for shots.

Oof sorry you feel bad hope you feel better, in another I’m going into cuteness overload from this derpiness
