Whoa whoa whoa.
A new chapter? This soon?
Crazy, I know. Truth be told, I've probably been thinking about and editing this chapter inside my head for the past few years.
So. This is the big moment, Season 3 finale. Had to be covered, of course, with how much things got affected. Of course, Meteorite isn't immune to the changes of the spell that Twilight casts, so it was easy to figure out how she gets affected. The question that quickly arose was, when do these changes occur?
Because the episode doesn't make it easy to determine. At first, everything's normal, just the cutie marks are different, then Twilight goes and sings a sad song, and suddenly Sweet Apple Acres and the Carousel Boutique get hit with years of neglect, and everypony is fucking pissed with each other. So, what is it? Did this spell change the timeline? Because that's what it's leading you to believe. So then, why was it normal beforehand, and why does Twilight still have a photo of her friends from before?
What I've decided is that, after casting the spell, the spell doesn't just change the Elements and stops. It goes on to change everything else, and just... doesn't stop. It gets to the farm and boutique and realises, 'oh shit, this place should be run down' and changes it. But then it overlooks little details and has to hastily sweeps them under the rug when it can't nicely slot it into the new timeline.
But, why would the spell be faulty like this?
Because it is faulty.
It's literally Starswirl's incomplete spell. It doesn't work right, and it has no way of stopping, until Twilight actively starts countering the spell's changes. The spell would just keep on changing things with no regard for plausibility or continuity.
...essentially what I'm saying is, the spell is a writer that rewrites older chapters without revising later chapters to line up properly.
Well, this was originally supposed to be the ending of FiM.

I'm aware; doesn't mean I don't still have to try and make sense of it. :)
