So the news has broken that Superman will be officially rebooted completely, and Henry Cavill will not be returning to the role after all.
Gonna be honest, I'm...mixed, and a lot more so than I thought I would. All this time, I've been hoping for a clean slate reboot, a fresh chance. But in recent months, with Cavill's Superman cameo in Black Adam and the possibilities of his return, I actually grew to be more supportive of him taking up the cape again. My problems with the DCEU's take have never been focused on him as an actor, more so the material he was given to work with.
So yeah, I'm sad to see him not have that one last chance after all.
But on the other hand, I admire how well he's handling this turn of events, and in general I admire his resiliency in sticking through the perpetual mess that has been DC movies since 2013. He's been more of a Superman than anything the movies ever gave him. I think the real deal would be proud of him. And I've long maintained that if people are going to look up to these characters as the inspiration they're supposed to be, then they should take a few lessons from them as well.
So...I'm gonna keep looking up in the sky, as it were. I won't preemptively judge James Gunn or anyone else working on the next iteration of DC movies. I will be patient and wait to see what comes next, and await the day I get to see a character I've come to love so much get another chance to make us believe a man can fly.
I'm hoping that we get to see a really true Superman rendition.
