Comet Sunblaze lives an easy live. A life within the safety of the castle, living with her adopted mother, Celestia, whom she loves more than anything in the world. She has faced few challenges, excluding her education. But when Cadence reveals herself to be Queen of the Changelings on the day of the Royal Wedding, Comet's days of being a princess are over. Promising to return, she flees the city to Ponyville to live while she devises a plan to save her family.

Dusk Starbringer, a wealthy teenage unicorn living with her father, also lives a fairly sheltered live. She goes to school, reads extensively, and eats and sleeps. A simple life. But after a swarm of changelings attacks Ponyville, killing her father and putting the town under marshal law, she finds herself living a life that is much harder than she ever imagined. Legally an adult by Changeling standards, she suddenly has to support herself in a world that is being drained slowly of love.
