Whence by itself already means 'from where', so 'from whence' is technically redundant. It is nevertheless used with a non-insignificant frequency, occasionally to fit a meter in poetry but more often I would say in modern times in situations as this, where the term itself is less common and utilized to invoke a particular feel. But who cares, right?
