This is one of the most annoying tropes in MLP fanfic. Authors will unnecessarily, and painfully, handicap themselves because they think that this is necessary. I realize that I can't single-handedly kill this, but I'm damn well going to try.

Now, don't get me wrong. I love semicolons; I've used them fairly often in my own stories, even. But there seems to be this strange belief that semicolons are the better, cooler, more sophisticated version of a colon. I guess it looks kind of like a colon with a necktie (granted, I don't know where a colon's neck is), so there's that. But that aside, it's important to remember that there actually is a difference between semicolons and colons. Let's look at two fairly similar examples.

If you liked angsty Pinkie Pie in "The Pinkie Paradox," or think I'm just generally delightful, go check out the oneshot I wrote last night. Pinkie Pie confronts the end of all things as only she can.

I have the strangest urge to write some ridiculous story with Pinkie Pie. The phrase in the title has been floating around my mind for about the last half hour. A story entitled "Pinkie Pie and the Heat Death of the Universe" has also spontaneously appeared in my list of stories, although that doesn't seem to have much of a purpose. Well, I mean, other than making Pinkie miserable by telling her that every party, everywhere, will one day come to an end- forever.

The word is, of course, headcanon.

So right now, I'm playing around with a story idea that centers around Nightmare Moon having banished Celestia to the sun a thousand years ago, thus bringing about the eternal night, etc.
