With Pinkie gone, Princess Celestia gives Rainbow the task of finding another pony to inherit the Necklace of Laughter. Dedicated to the memory of Ace2401.
This felt like the reveal was a bit rushed, having no foreshadowing, or if there was, I just missed it. Other then that this was a solid chapter, cant wait to see where this goes.
So Rainbow accidentally killed it? Ouch! And what an amazing development! A full-on changeling attack on Ponyville! It would have been even better if the writing gave more of a feeling of action and frantic chaos - we only really got a paragraph with quite a plain description of what was happening. But, still, I can easily fill in what was happening with my imagination... and the attack's only just starting! I'm sure there'll be plenty of time for the action to ramp up later.
Surprise's true identity is a very creative and exciting twist...
no... a twist... ...I certainly wasn't expecting it! I'm afraid I have similar feelings to quade, who commented earlier on this chapter. It felt a little bit strange to have Queen Chrysalis pause in her attack to explain to Surprise what she'd done. It felt a little rushed, in the way she quickly revealed all that she'd done with Surprise in one paragraph, and it broke the flow of the story a bit - we're meant to be in the middle of a chaotic, frightening night-time attack from monsters, but then we pause for Chrysalis to have a quick conversation with Surprise. It wasn't really that bad, and it did effectively reveal Surprise's shocking secret, but I just think that maybe it could have been handled a bit better. Maybe Chrysalis could have blasted Surprise first, revealing her true form, and then, while Surprise (and we, the audience!) were still reeling from the shock of what had just happened, THEN Chrysalis could explain who Surprise was, with her explanation interrupted here and there by Surprise's cries of shock and denial? Sorry if I'm being too finicky. I seriously do like this chapter!
When I think about it, Surprise's true identity isn't just creative and surprising - it's actually quite clever! I mean, the clues were there from the start, weren't they? Surprise looks almost exactly like Pinkie Pie, so it fits! (I suppose she didn't take on a completely identical appearance to Pinkie because that would be much too suspicious.) So, in response to quade's comment, there may have been a bit of subtle foreshadowing of the reveal! (I certainly missed it!)
Well done and thank you for another good chapter! There are now so many questions to be answered! I can't wait to find out more!
listened to this while reading this chapter the beat works with it also sh*t's goin' down damn i'm not so sure about this whole "surprise is a changeling" thing so i'm looking forward to see where you take it onwards!
I still think that Surprise is going to be the Element of Laughter. After all there is no rule about Changelings not being able to handle the EoH. I'm wondering if she'll stay an independent Changeling, or if the EoH will change her into a normal pony? I hope she'll stay a Changeling.
Poor Surprise.....
