Noah Webster (creator of Webster's Dictionary , the first American dictionary) separated American spelling from English spelling. You Brits are the exception to Mark Twain's famous comment that "Foreigner's always spell better than they pronounce"

ICR who had a list of 5 novels & 5 short stories that even people who didn't read scifi knew (pre Harry Potter). All the novels were written by Brits, all the shorts by us & all pre 1960. I'm sure that's a deeply meaningful insight but No Clue Whatsoever what it means
