I have been noticing more dislikes on some of my stories. Any Ideas on writing more stories that'll get some peoples attention? Most importantly, What am I doing wrong?

I've always loved reading and editing fanficion, yet I've never posted my own story. I think this is due to the fact that when I was younger and started to write my first story on paper that I planned to upload, my step-mother saw it and decided I shouldn't be writing about ponies and threw it into a paper shredder. Ever since then I've never worked up the courage to write again.
