Welcome back readers! It’s Monday, and another Being a Better Writer article is upon us! Though first, I do have two bits of news. Don’t worry, they’re both short.
Why do your characters do what they do?
It seems like a simple question. And, likewise, a simple answer. Why do they do what they do? Because they want to.
Okay, but why?
Character motivation is one of those topics that seems pretty straightforward. You have a character, and you want them to do something, so they need a reason to do it, right?
All right! And we’re back with today’s follow-up to one of our more recent posts! Remember? The one about health?
Okay, I’m actually joking. This isn’t a post about that. But it was too good an opportunity a joke to pass up. Sagging middle … anyway …
So … I picked that title because it looked and read better than my other alternatives. One of which was “The Heavy Hand of Whatever” which really didn’t inspire a lot of confidence. Another was the several knit-together topics that this post was to cover … which would leave you, readers, with a giant string to look at. Then the last was a giant string (______) in place of “the Writer.”
Real cheery title for the first post of 2017, isn't it?
Seriously though, welcome to 2017! I hope it feels like as much of a breath of fresh air for the rest of you as it does from me. Though in my case, it's mostly because I took the last two weeks off.
I know. I took an actual vacation. Cleared games out of my backlog, read a bunch of books, and everything. And you know what's funniest about it?
Yes! Being a Better Writer has returned to Monday!
Honestly, I think I just got lucky this week in not being called into work today, but even so, it feels good to be working on BaBW on a Monday again! This is the day when it's supposed to go down ... Well, up, technically.
Today is also the first day we'll be going off of Topic List IX! That's right, new list, new topics!
Which brings us to today's topic of choice: digging deeper with characters!
Greetings from Alaska, readers! Yes, that's right, I'm home visiting my parents for a few days. And old friends. It's fantastic. I flew in Sunday morning, after a nice long layover in Seattle which was most of my Saturday. As usual, the trip to my hometown was roughly a full day's journey.
