Or maybe they mean something like the "Saints Row" franchise? That's dark and slightly random but makes sense in the long run.

I don't pretend to know what raichu means or quite recall what the "random" tag signifies, but I'm thinking they mean random in the sense of "not connected to a hugely overarching plot. More self contained but legitimate.
Like "that one-off book you read and loved but never got a sequel to flesh out" kind of deal.
