Even if he manages to break the cocoon he is injured and surrounded in the hive.

He has some advantages...

He is seemingly unguarded.

He is somewhat emotionally cloaked.

And he has some combat training.

What’s his best chance of escape, part from dumb luck?

Stealth tactics. First, identify that he isn't as injured as he was when he was first brought in, meaning that they have some form of healing ability. Discover source, if it's external collect as much as possible to get as well as you can. Second, understand that he is a single pony surrounded by enemies, look for breaks in the patrol roots that can be exploited by either pure stealth or targeted knock outs or see if there is some form of "ventilation" system that can be used to sneak around.

Thirdly, as soon as he escapes, he's on a timer. Eventually someling is going to check on his pod, so he needs to make tracks as fast as possible. Luckily, he's not pulling a full stealth mission and having to collect something while inside, he just needs to make it out...

Of course, that brings up its own challenges, considering that he's in the Badlands and alone... with any luck, he'll manage to link up with Thorax again and get some help in stage 2 of the escape. Either way, its going to turn into a stallionhunt once word gets out that he's escaped. With any luck, he'll make it to one of the southern cities and catch a train to Canterlot ASAP.

....all of this assuming that Celestia hasn't mobilized the entire military to take him back, in which case he just needs to make it the edge of the Black Throne's influence.
