And thanks. I started with Pinkie Pie's color, than drifted around looking for a good color from there, since I knew I didn't want exactly that color, just something in that ballpark. I did also vaguely have Spike's coloration in mind, and felt that monster mare's coloration shouldn't be too close to the norm. And the nails are red 'cause she paints them!

On the background, I did several single layer backgrounds, then masked all of them with subtle gradients.

I do like how this came out a lot.
