Equestrians against Food Wastage 5 members · 1 stories

Food wastage is one of the greatest problems on Earth. Every year, hundreds of million tons of perfectly edible food is thrown away, a third of all the food we produce. On the fields, many fruits and vegetables are thrown away because they are not good enough for the high standards of our grocery markets. At those, more food is thrown away to be replaced by fresher, but not more edible food. Additionall, it is much more displayed than can be sold, just to make it pleasing to the eye. In restaurants, large buffets are served, and all the plates are kept full until in the evening everything left is thrown away. In our households, we throw away food, because it doesn´t seem to be usefull anymore (most vegetable peels you can use to make a good soup with), because you cooked it the wrong way, it doesn´t look so good anymore, you already bought new stuff, or accidentally bought food you don´t like and throw away. From this food wastage, over three billion people could be fed. Three. Billion. People.
And there are hundreds of millions of people starving every year.
Also, the food waste produces large amounts of methane while it composts, making it a contributor to the green house effect as great as all the cars on earth.
This last point could be solved by feeding it to farm animals, like pigs. At the moment, they are fed with soy and similar stuff, taking away ground to grow food for starving humans.

Are you concerned about this? Does this make you think?
Then you are right here! In this group, we debate about how we can minimize our food wastage, discuss the methods the governements, companies and other people use to fight against this - or what they, and what we, should do and can do against this, and inform people about this problem.
