I started this group up not only because Thunderlane is my favorite background character/stallion, but I'm honestly tired of the limited variety in fanfics.

Not saying that they're bad or anything, but every story seems to be about the Mane 6. Mane 6 and Celestia, Mane 6 and Spike, Mane 6 and Anon it's all been seen and done before, so it's no surprise when you see one of those being in the featured box.

I understand that they're main characters and all, but there are so many other characters that can be used and fleshed out to have an interesting backstory.

What's worse is that some fics that are really good, never get their shine because some Rainbow Dash x Twilight fic is already taking up the spotlight.

I may be grasping at short straws, but that's how I feel about it. What about you guys?

The Mane Six get written about the most because they're the easiest to write. Their characterisation is so well established that you don't really need to think much about it; you know how they act, where they live, what they do, etc. A Thunderlane story (or a story about any background character) requires more effort, and the audience is less guaranteed because not as many people know what to expect with him.

Sometimes background characters do break out if the stories are VERY good - the best example is probably Thunderlane's fellow pegasus, Cloud Kicker, who is well known from the Winningverse (for all the wrong reasons). So there's hope for the dark stallion still. :)

To answer the question, I joined this group because I suggested creating a new one back in the old group (nice job, by the way, but be sure to recruit some admins!), and I wanted to be on hoof to offer assistance if needed.

I can't say I've been a total Thunderlane fan in the past, but he has several things going for him: his character design is interesting, he's actually had lines, and he has an established family (Rumble), making him one of the few pegasi to do so. In addition, his cutie mark makes it pretty clear what he's about, and it's something that no other pony has yet been seen to specialise in.

Thunderlane is the Element of Honesty in the Flipverse.

I understand the whole easier to write thing, so I can't complain about that. I still wish that there were more fanfics for background characters in the near future though.

Maybe I'm just asking for too much, who knows?
