Here's an interesting question, which things in the comics do you think did better then the series?

4478803 The villain back-stories.

Backstory and portrayal of characters, that do not get the chance to shine in the show. Especially Luna and Celestia are awesome in the comics.

4478803 Well, back before they went downhill, the comics were really good at utlizing pairings the show either hadn't considered or had given little thought to. They were also great at giving the spotlight to reformed villans like Trixie and Discord, and giving Sombra and Tirek really cool backstories (Sombra's felt very much like a Shakesperian Tragedy in modern writing, and Tirek's made him even more of a B.A. than he already was in show).

Sadly, the comics now are in a major slump that they have yet to pull out of. Their main series is riddled with questionable artwork, badly OOC characters, morally bankrupt Alicorn Twilight, horribly contrived plots with tons of filler, and generally flat humor and jokes. Their Friends Forver series isn't much better, as issue after issue keeps throwing in this third OC character that takes up all the spotlight (they've done it four times already this year, that's at least a quarter of a year).

Action and adventure themed stories, better, more detailed background on certain characters especially villains and antagonists (the Fiendship is Magic series is awesome).

Well, as much as I dislike the split Flutterbat and some portrayals of Rarity, I like their Rarity from FF 13 and their DT and SS as well. They did especially well with these two, as they stuck to the truth of the matter: DT and SS are best friends, and Silver won't go over to the CMC for no reason at all.
