It could work.

There could be an AU story of Twilight's talk to Starlight Glimmer not being able to work and she would still threaten the princess with the destruction of the time spell. Twilight could use the time spell and travel back to Starlight's youth and adopt and raise Starlight as her own, if no parents are to be found ofcourse. Therefore stopping Starlight's ideas of Equalization and making the present Starlight be suddenly thrown a bucket on new memories, her personality changing and her ideas of being equal gone.

If you wanted something dark, then it'd be written so Twilight, after looking after a filly Startlight, would have to return back home... The long way round.

And the whole debate on whether you should force change upon someone by altering their past for better or worse via time travel.
