Obviously, there are loads of stuff that can be considered good morality in the Bible (like some of the 10 commandments and some of the hippie/socialistic Jesus preachings).

However, there are some parts that would be considered plain wicked by most people. In some parts, the Bible promotes:
- murder (God kills 70,000 innocent people because He has a beef with David (1 Chronicles 21))
- rape, pillage&plunder (kill every man in the town. But you may keep for yourselves all the women, children, livestock, and other plunder. You may enjoy the spoils of your enemies)
- warfare (God orders the destruction of 60 cities so that the Israelites can live there.)
- slavery (We even have instructions on how to properly beat on the slaves)
- human sacrifice (I don't know why God gets off to that)

Do you really believe that every single part of the Bible is the source of a good morality? Jesus says that you should:

It is easier for Heaven and Earth to pass away than for the smallest part of the letter of the law to become invalid (Luke 16:17).

, but what do you think?

As a continuation of a previous thread: I'm actually pretty fresh to the whole Christianity lifestyle, by about 6-8 months, so I can honestly say I cannot 'seriously' talk about law, as such I concede, I do not have as much knowledge as is required to accurately answer you.

6031473 That's very humbling of you. But fear not. There are many experienced Christians in this group. I'm sure some of them will be able to explain to me why murder, rape, slavery and human sacrifices are moral. God condones them, and since all morality comes from God, we already have the conclusion. All those atrocities are moral because God says so. What remains a mystery is why Christians don't rape, murder and beat their slaves. Is it because they aren't true Christians? Is it because they don't take the morality from the Bible as they were supposed to? I'd hate to speculate. Best wait for the experienced Christians to step forward and explain themselves.

Hang on, isn't everything minus the Jesus quote from the old testament? isn't there a Jewish group or something you can spread that to?

6031490 Jesus was definitely down with human sacrifice.

Also, why are you trying to retract what Jesus said?

And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll.
Revelation 22:19

- murder (God kills 70,000 innocent people because He has a beef with David (1 Chronicles 21))

Really? You sure they're innocent? Because in my Bible, it says that He already had something against them. You want to say, for instance, that it was wrong of us to kill 3.76 million German soldiers in WWII?

- rape, pillage&plunder (kill every man in the town. But you may keep for yourselves all the women, children, livestock, and other plunder. You may enjoy the spoils of your enemies)

Throughout the Old Testament, it discusses the morality of the people who were there first. We have reports of baby sacrifice, and we also have conjecture of other horrors. As an example, other people who God wanted to violently punish were the Gibeonites, because of the woman (maybe there were more) they pretty much murdered by sexual assault.

- warfare (God orders the destruction of 60 cities so that the Israelites can live there.)

See above.

- slavery (We even have instructions on how to properly beat on the slaves)

Actually, we have instructions to free slaves if we beat them too harshly.

- human sacrifice (I don't know why God gets off to that)

God didn't actually want him sacrificed that way. Now, Jesus was a consenting human, sacrificed for all. He also came back to life. Now, it is commanded that we present our bodies a living sacrifice, but that's a horse of a different color.

There you have it.

Let me guess you are going to say serial killers don't deserve death sentence.

6031533

He already had something against them.

These were David’s people. People of Israel. And it’s David who done goofed. God is mad at David, but the people take the hit for it.

Your comparison is all wrong. This is the more correct one:
Your spouse pisses you off, so you go on a killing rampage, killing half of your country’s population.

We have reports of baby sacrifice, and we also have conjecture of other horrors.

We have reports of people in America who sacrificed their babies. Should we nuke America for it?

You can vilify any group of people if you want. If we all adhered to this logic, the whole world would be in a constant state of war because everybody would hate on everyone else.

See above.

Yes, I bet all 60 cities were evil and they just happened to be viable for expansion of Israelites. Don’t you just love lucky coincidences?

Actually, we have instructions to free slaves if we beat them too harshly.

Do you, personally, adhere to these instructions? Do you free your slaves after you beat the crap out of them?

God didn't actually want him

I’m not talking just about his son.

“Take your son, your only son – yes, Isaac, whom you love so much – and go to the land of Moriah.  Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will point out to you.” (Genesis 22:1-18)

Consecrate to me every first-born that opens the womb among Israelites, both man and beast, for it belongs to me. Exodus 13:2

All human beings that are doomed lose the right to be redeemed; they must be put to death.

If you give me victory over the Ammonites, I will give to the LORD the first thing coming out of my house to greet me when I return in triumph.  I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.(Judges 11:29-40 NLT)

The one who has stolen what was set apart for destruction will himself be burned with fire, along with everything he has(Joshua 7:15 NLT)

On you he will sacrifice the priests from the pagan shrines who come here to burn incense(1 Kings 13:1-2 NLT)

As gold in the furnace, he proved them, and as sacrificial offerings he took them to himself.(Wisdom 3:5-7)

You shall be fuel for the fire(Ezekiel 21:33-37 NAB)

Put the entire town to the torch as a burnt offering to the LORD your God.(Deuteronomy 13:13-19 NLT)

There you have it.

6031663 Wait, you believe that we should kill God? I knew you were an extremist, but I had no idea.

6031851
See that is your problem. When we talk about X you come out of nowhere and say boobs.

6031853
> We talk about God, the genocidal murderer.
> You imply that murderers should be put to death.
> I double-check if killing your God is really your intent.
> You change the subject.

6031855
I never said God is serial killer. That is you.
Stop putting words into my mouth.

6031864 We already know he's a serial killer. He killed way more people than Satan did.

The question is, should we put genocidal murderers, like God, to death. If I understood your comment correctly, you are of the opinion that we should, indeed, put serial killers to death.

6031884
So I guess eisenhower and other American soliders need to be arrested as war criminals.

6031889 There's a difference between fighting a war and killing innocents. Eisenhower fought against the enemy who declared war. God just killed innocents because David pissed him off with mathematics (God hates counting).

6031923

Mathematics sucks and makes me want to kill people too.

6031923
Stop with trolling. If God hated math... How did Noah created his Ark?

6032020 That's all the Bible says about the issue. David resorted to counting and God got pissed off. It doesn't say why He got mad, so one would naturally conclude that the counting part was the issue. David apologized to God, but God was like, "You pissed me off, now I'm gonna screw with your people."

Perhaps Noah did use math but didn't resort to counting. Or maybe Noah did use counting, and it pissed off God so much that He flooded the entire world.

6032075
How did Noah managed to get two of every animal without counting?

6032734 The animals actually came by themselves. Not sure how kangaroos managed to jump to Noah from Australia. Also not sure how two Tyrannosaurs fitted in the ship. Either way, the point is, Noah didn't actually have to count them. They just came to him.

And if Noah did resort to counting, it would explain why God lost his shit and flooded the entire planet.

6032767
That makes zero sense. What you are saying is similar to this: when a murderer gets executed and he had bread as a last meal... You are saying he got killed because he had bread.

6032773 Why do you think God was pissed off at David when he performed counting?

We have information about why murderers get executed, but besides the instance of counting, the Bible doesn't any other reason to go by.

If the story was:

A man sat safely in his chambers. But all was not well, for he was hungry. He nervously looked at the bread. With a shaking hand, he reached for it. After he consumed the bread in his chambers, he died.

, then yes, I would assume that his death was connected with the bread. And if you look at the Bible, the instance with David is written in the similar fashion. David performs counting, and God gets pissed off because of that.
