He was an old man who trolled alone on a five-year-old laptop on the Internet and he had gone two years now without a story in the Featured box. In the first forty days a ferret had been with him but the ferret's friends had told her that the old man was definitely and finally furry, which is the worst kind of nerd, and the ferret had gone at their urging to another fandom where her stories had gotten into the Featured box three times in the first month. It made the ferret sad to see the old man's blog come up each day with no new entries and she always went down to the website to help him with his punchlines or gaffes or lampoons and the sail that he never trimmed to the prevailing winds. That sail was patched with worn-out T-shirts bearing memes from the early aughts and, furled, it looked like the flag of permanent defeat.
