The Windtunnel Not-Quite-A-Verse: Thoughts on Crash Component · 11:42pm Feb 22nd, 2022
For what was supposed to be >1000 words of slapstick so I could get auto-approval for the Who Crossed Over Contest, this one certainly took a life of its own.
I guess this story (it’s not going to be a verse, it’s not going to be a verse, it’s not going to be a verse) could be considered a love letter to Black Box Down. I guess if you enjoy hearing about aviation disasters and how all this stuff works you aren’t as keen to gloss things over in the name of comedy. Goshdarn it.
It was supposed to be 1000 words…
But I like these characters. Don't ask me why. Quick comedy oneshot characters are frequently built from stock, and mine are no exception.
Birdstrike had his powers fleshed out by Estee's blog. As for the rest of him? He's a nice-but-dumb jock. That's all he needs to be.
Clover? G2 Clover in G4 skin.
Airframe? Antagonist without being an antagonist, the essence of every corner-cutting boss you've ever had, and several that appeared on Black Box Down.
Escalus? The reasonable authority figure here to deliver one line and exit the story.
But, as it turns out, when you put little pieces of your soul into characters, no matter how stock they began as, you start to like them. And I think there are future stories waiting for them, if I'm willing to write them.
Birdstrike is cut from the dumb jock mold. He is also very aware of how close he came to death as a teenager experimenting with his magic. And he and Crocus are trying for a foal...
Do you want to know what Birdstrike's worst nightmare is? That he has a kid who's just like him.
Clover is a G2 pony in G4 skin. I wonder how that's changed her. I wonder how that's changed her friends...
Airframe almost killed a pony through negligence. How did that affect him? Can he ever go back to work again?
And Escalus. Oh the stories he could tell. For starters, how did he get into the airship business in the first place?
I have too many stories in my head already. But something about them keeps pulling me back.
Stay tuned.
